About 3canal
3canal is a band from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, The members Wendell Manwarren, Roger Roberts and Stanton Kewley formed the band in 1997, to “create a space and make a statement” within the Trinidad Carnival festival. Their name “3canal” derives from the indigenous machete, which was used by farmers to clear a space for growth.
Their genre, Rapso, defined as the fusion of Rap and Calypso, grew out of the socio-political unrest of the ‘70’s. Fuelled by the challenges facing young artistes in a post-colonial society, 3canal began cutting their own path in Trinidad’s music industry, defining things on their own terms and challenging the norms. We never intended to be players in the music business, we started off by looking for solutions to some of the problems faced by artists coming from a place where the odds are stacked against you,” says Roger Roberts.
