A Truly Great Country Song
With a true country sound TJ Kelly delivers a very heartfelt song in "Daddy's Gene's. I hope that Nashville pays attention with this one. We need more pure country artists. TJ Kelly is indeed an artist.

Standard vanilla
Nice vocals with a Gordon Lightfoot type of feel. Garth Brooks influence is definitely there. Good production. A typical country ballad with a good story being told through guitar and voice. There is a bit of Jim Croce there as well. The steel pedal is very tasteful. No surprises really, TJ Kelly just followed the typical country ballad mode and kept it safe. This renders you a good review but not a great one. I think that with the singers voice and obvious musical talent, TJ should try to push the boundaries within the genre and do something a little risky to break the mold. This would make the song more interesting and less vanilla. This by no means is a dis. On the contrary, the song is well produced and goes over nicely. This is just a suggestion to make it stand out. Perhaps a bridge that stammers into a different time signature for 4 to 8 bars. Something to push it over the edge and make it stand out. That being said, perhaps TJ's intention was to do something very standard and traditional which would make my comment moot and to which I would say he accomplished what he set out to do. Either way, nice job and best of luck to you.

DADDY'S GENE'S - Review by Lora Stanley
The production, the vocals, and story line are excellent! I like how the verse flows well into the chorus. The musical composition is well developed and lyrically perfect if not a bit sentimental. My thoughts are how you plan to place the song given the subject matter being so sensitive. We all "hope" to have our little boys grow up to be just like their daddy's in a perfect world, but we do not live in a perfect world and some mothers pray their sons do not grow up to be like their fathers. My thoughts would lean for movie placement. Great song and good luck to you!

like a Jim Croce song with Harry Chapin singing
TJ Kelly brings us Daddy's Gene's Nashville version... I wonder if he was intentionally playing on words or meant to spell the word jeans... I suspect the former more than the latter but that may be way over many a listener's head. From a listener's perspective it has all the classic overtones of a country music hit. From a producer's standpoint, this is what happens when everyone gloms onto a hit recording technique... the formula gets so overused that every song sounds the same. My biggest complaint about the mixing/mastering of this song would be the compression for loudness and the crushing out of the dynamics at the most dynamic part of the song. Its a typical big name engineering flaw where they believe louder is better... a double edged weapon to be sure.

Impressed
It usually takes me a lot of searching to find a song I enjoy enough to write a review about. It is kind of like, "If you cannot say something nice.." T. J. Kelly's song, Daddy's Gene's, it well written. I generally do not perform other people's songs--other than national act covers. However, I would be interested in discussing the possibility of covering "Daddy's Genes" My Father was a great man--this song does speak to me in that way. However, Mr. Kelley's words paint an vivid picture of a young person watching a father's blatant disregard for his family. The song's father lives a life where he is free to do whatever he wants with little or no repercussion, while his long suffering wife seemingly does whatever it takes to keep family peace. Later the listener discovers that the person singing the song, has vowed to be different. Sadly, too often, the offspring of abusive or uncaring parents, emulate the actions and attitudes of they witness and suffer through as children. This person has chose not to be part of the cycle. I recommend listening.

You Can Wear This Song
You can wear this all thru life. I like the well written truth about this song, it grabs your right off the start like real true songs do.It takes me back when I was little to a time when my dad had to work to support seven of us kids. It's really hard to keep families together today. The whole song start to finish is in my book a great song. We need more heart wrenching songs out there today like this. This is what life is about and true to form. Songedge

Daddy's Genes
Daddy's Genes I listened to this song and by the time it was finished TJ Kelly had picked up another fan. Initally I wondered what was up with the title before I actually gave a listen to the number. I had suspected the writer didn't know how blue jeans was spelled. It didn't take long into the session for the revelation of the double meaning to hit me. It's a clever play on words and the lyrics are nicely done albiet a little sad. The melody is both catchy and estheticly pleasing. There is just enough in the melody presentation to make it distinct and memorable from other tunes. The vocal is sung with a lot of emotion and on key all the way. One can only wonder if the story line is from real life. The arrangement is exactly where it needs to be by gradually building the tracks into a full blown presentation of the band. The sound from the steel guitar delivery the essence of the feeling the lyrics portrayed. It's a good number and done really well. If you give it a spin I think you will also become a fan of the singer and the song. Nicely done.

Daddy's Jeans
Like it TJ. Did you write it? Background sounds really great. Mastering and mixing is always an issue. If you are serious about what you are doing I'd suggest having it mastered. Well worth the cost.

Rattlesnakes Review of 'Daddy's Gene's
Great title to a very nice soft song that wants to get to your listeners heart which I believe does, if I were in an audience and listening I think the song would make sense and maybe bring to mind a person who you ether know or maybe a woman who had a partner like that. Maybe a little more instrumental could have been played to drive home the sadness in the song. Thats about all I can say to improve this song, but on the whole..I give it an 8 out 10 score.
