About Amie Penwell

Amie Penwell Bio

“Penwell is regarded by many in the Bay Area to be one of the next big heavy weights.” — Mark Langton, Marin Independent Journal

“AP is a one-of-a-kind artist with real substance. In this corporate music world that is undoubtedly known for pumping out unoriginal, one-dimensional Pop Radio puppets, Amie Penwell is a breath of fresh air to say the very least… an artist with an honest-to-truth sound and is on pace to Humanize the music world.” — Jimmy Rae, Skope Magazine

"Haunting, cinematic, textured and epic. ‘Somewhere The Sky Is Blue’ sounds like Florence and the Machine covering Peter Gabriel. Like the best of Annie Lennox, Feist and Bon Iver, Penwell’s songs don’t pounce—they pull you in and stay with you long after the first listen."—Drew Pearce, Contributing Writer, Acoustic Guitar.

“Take the voice of an angel and drop it one octave, like a lover’s moan. That’s the sound of Amie Penwell. Her voice seduces the listener with a mixture of grit and polish that gives honesty a whole new meaning. This is not the voice of the girl next door—it’s the velvety crooning voice of a choirgirl who ran away with the preacher.” Paul Liberatore, Here Magazine

In Part 1 of a two-part release, R&B/soul/pop musician Amie Penwell will likely be taking some of her music fans by surprise. Her latest recordings reveal a bold eclecticism, blending Alternative Soul with New Age instrumentation in a remix of her song “Somewhere The Sky Is Blue.” Mixing eastern and western influences, the two new versions offer complete re-imaginations of her 2012 track. The first version features Grammy-winning producer Ricky Kej on keyboards and arrangements, Vanil Veigas on santoor, and flute master Butto. The second version is an intimate live B side featuring Bay Area flugelhorn player Jeff Oster.

The new recordings will be supported by a full-production video directed and edited by Matt Palazzolo. Bay Area artist Elaine Penwell was commissioned to create the original artwork for the cover. In August 2015, Penwell will debut “Somewhere the Sky Is Blue” as a featured guest on the Lifetime TV show “Ask Bon Bon.”

“Having the opportunity to work with artists of this caliber has made this a life-changing project,” says Penwell, “It was an extraordinary moment to say ‘Yes.’ Ricky, Butto, Vanil, and Jeff all inspired me to hear these songs cloaked in different environments. And working with Matt and Elaine, I wanted to have the visuals of those environments mirror the song, to represent the light and dark of our natures. “

Raised by an Irish/Italian family in Massachusetts, Penwell is the youngest of four siblings, all of whom were avid music lovers. She grew up around stereos blasting The Police, Van Halen, Rush, Journey, Prince, Kenny Rogers and John Denver years before finding her core influences: Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, Sade, Chris Whitley, Jeff Buckley, Sinead O’Connor, Daniel Lanois, and early 90s hip-hop. In 1994, she moved to California with a sleeping bag and $300, eventually settling near San Francisco. Though a late bloomer in the Bay Area music community, she’s since become one of its most respected voices.

That respect was first established when her signature song “Mercy” was featured in the award-winning 2012 documentary, “The Eyes of Thailand.” Then, she continued to earn a larger following with her 2012 release, Under City Lights.

"Under City Lights was a meditation on San Francisco, written during long walks through the city,” Penwell explains. “The contrasts of San Francisco are stark. One minute, you’re on a glorious hilltop feeling like you’re in Greece or Italy. The next, you’re in the Tenderloin watching drug deals happen all around you. Somehow the light and the dark filter together. The stories come."

It was an album full of atmosphere, one that struck a rare balance between Adult Alternative Pop/Rock and full-throated Soul/R&B. The album features collaborations with Andy Korn on drums, Josh Lava on production/guitars/keys, Rob Fordyce on bass, Cameron Derek Morgan on Guitars, Grammy-nominated producer Ben Leinbach, engineer Jaimeson Durr, Danny Cao on trumpet, and mixing engineer Reto Peter.

Penwell says, “I make music to make sense out of being alive, to try and be a fair witness to myself and others, to tell myself and you the truth. To let you know that you are never alone. To share my deepest with you so we don’t need to be afraid. To live my dream out loud and out in the open to let you know that if I can you can no matter what you come from, or how old you are.”

Penwell is currently working with Producer Alex Wong (Vienna Teng, Amber Rubarth) on a Dark Dance Remix of her song “Dogfight On The Moon.” In addition to finishing her new record, Penwell is busy with one-on-one Creative Mentoring Sessions, and teaching her Soul Song Series to teens on Martha’s Vinyard, where she will also be a featured guest DJ on tastemakers AAA 88.9 MVY Radio.
