great jazz

"Green Dolphin Street" is excellently interpreted, totally soulfully pitched, excellent groove of the rhythm section, which is perfectly transferred to the soloists. Great improvisations within the piece. Stories are told and dynamically offered to the listener. It is a pleasure to listen to you ! Bravo...

Question One: Who replaced Lester Young in Count Basie's Band?

Helpful

Answer: Buddy Tate (1918-2001). According to Tony Mendez Music page on Soundcloud, this is a 1984 live performance from Basin Street-a club in Toronto, Ontario Canada. Question Two: Who is the most famous Canadian Jazz pianist? Answer: Oscar Peterson (1925-2007) Well question Two is just trivia. The pianist on this recording is Toronto based pianist Norman Amadio who recently passed away in 2020. What you're getting on this recording is a well developed "Texas" tenor swing stylist, who probably assimilated a little bit of the bebop language, but stay firmly rooted in swing, playing a club in Toronto with local professional musicians. Buddy Tate is from the Coleman Hawkins school of tenor sax. (Not an actual school- but a descriptor of a dichotomy created by jazz heads to describe the two most influential tenor sax stylists of the Swing era. Coleman Hawkins heavier tone multi note solos relating to each chord in the changes, but also breathy on slow ballads; and Lester Young lighter airy touch, fluid with his lines, no breathy ballads-different attack, different approach. (Charlie Parker was in the Lester Young school.) Tate is backed by a very talented group of Canadian musicians led by Norman Amadio on Keyboard. There is some decent piano comping/soloing and bass soloing as well. Tate is a little rough toned he's playing the melody to On Green Dolphin Street- a modern sounding jazz standard. (There are several live performances of Coltrane playing tenor sax of this tune with Miles Davis circa 1960-any of these would be my personal favs- I would recommend). Tate plays swing style improvised solo with Amadio comping behind him on a piano that to me sounds a little unusual/tinny tonally. I read the Wikipedia article on Amadio which says he was influenced by Lennie Tristano ( ("cool school" different/unorthodox harmonic approach) and Bud Powell (Tatum-like bebop virtuoso). Not what I was hearing-He was playing clever and musical harmonic lines but not like Powell or Tristano, Amadio was one of the top jazz pianists in Canada. So kudos there. With any music by a great master, (Buddy Tate was selected by Count Basie to fill the tenor chair of Lester Young), I show great deference, but the music for me is not mind blowing like Coltrane's several live versions with Miles. If you think Trane is shite and love swing, the then 66 year old Tate still has some fire in him. Blues rock guitar analogy-This would be like listening to a decent guitar player, with a decent backing band -but it's not Hendrix, (or whoever you consider a guitar god-Allan Holdsworth, EVH, SRV?). So check it out. Thanks for the history World Studios. I didn't see this performance in a released recording is Discogs. Peace. Out.

Awesome introduction and presentation on this one. Really enjoyed the feeling this song creates. Mellow and Intricate at the same time. I found my dog didn’t like the horn and started chasing the neighbor just say I have to move now. Thanks for the music

World studios release " Green Dolphin Street"

Straight ahead jazz standard from a 1947 film of same name and popularised in 1959 by Miles Davis Quintet and again by Bill Evans. Excellent live recording (or presented as that) with rock solid Bass and Drums, grooving Piano and wonderful Saxophone as lead instrument. This is a seriously good combo, methinks a sample of what World Studios produce. If you dig that golden era of Black and White cool Jazz from the late 1950s and early 1960s, you'll love this. Highly recommended by this reviewer and has encouraged me to take a peek into other stuff from this studio.

I like the originality of your work. Strong message and creativity is a big plus. Good production, I can hear some good vocals to this, good job on the final mix-down. I can tell you have your heart and soul into what you do. Keep on pushing and never give up or get distracted in pursuing the dream of making it. I like the instrumental blend of sounds with some vocals and the production on the track is good. Keep up the great work! Peace!!!

nice version of green dolphin street!

Green Dolphin Street is one of those tunes every musician should know. Here, World Studios performs a swinging version without too much fanfare, just the meat and potatoes. I wish the members of the band were named somewhere, but I assume the saxophone player is Bud. He sounds like he is heavily influenced by Coleman Hawkins , Illinois Jacket and maybe a little bit of Dexter Gordon. Fab pianist!

Nice Song

This is such a nice track to listen to. Great playing by all musicians involved... really love to Sax work. Lovely mix, it's a delight to listen to... nice full low end without overpowering the lead instruments. Beautiful tone on the sax... love how held back the drums are. Still driving the song along but keeping out of everyone's way perfectly. Everything within the playing of all the instruments makes this such a pleasure to listen to.

A Green Dolphin Street Tour

This is a stylized, but well executed jazz standard, which as in most straight jazz pieces, merely touches on the melody at the beginning and end. Beyond the melody, it quickly becomes the platform for the soloists to ride on. The improvisation becomes the key to the piece, or "riding along on Green Dolphin Street"! Very capable musicians and a great example of what can be done with a recognizable tune.

Bonus for a live recording.

Nice mix all the instruments are heard clearly and in balance. The clarinet has a pleasing tone to set up the melody. Good comp work by the piano. The upright and drums hold it all together. I enjoyed the bass as it swung during the solo. Im surprised there is no audence reaction captured on the track. That may add to the live feel. Digging the solo piano now. The bass and drums are holding it down but another harmony instrument (guitar) would give the solo room to breath a bit more and another instrument to trade fours with. Its a longer track where everyone gets to have a go. Nice work abrupt end was unfortunate but shit sometimes happens..B

I truly appreciate this very musical piece of music. I played Double Bass and studied classical music for 7 years. This song is smooth and soothing to the ear. The clarinet player is very tallented and I like the swing feel.

World Studios

I have been behind the eight ball with my reviews, but this one WorldStudios jumped out at me. They call it smooth jazz genre & I hear that. I also hear traditional jazz that stands the test of time. This tune would have been right at home in a French Cabaret in the 1930's. That being said, I like the sound!. I wish there were out there like it. In particular I really enjoyed the interplay between the the sax and piano as well as the drums and bass player (who by the way does a very nice solo in this piece. Very nice. But a copy!

Expectations Exceeded !!!

Congratulations to World Studios !!! Expectations Exceeded !!! I was very captivated by the sound of the lead singers voice and the feel of this track as well. Mixed very well, and the ambience of the live setting as well as the work from the saxophonist. The instrumentation on this one is great. The sound is nice, clean and clear. It has that old time jazz club feel that brings back the memories of vintage jazz from back in the day. A live recording done very well. Congratulations on this one !!! Nicely done !!!

A load of old cobblers

This may well appeal to jazz fanatics but, as I do not even come close to that description, it is not for me. I do not understand it or why anyone else does. It is just a lot of different notes signifying nothing but noise production. Pat Boone singing Love Letters In The Sand is more my cup of tea. Hopefully somebody else will be more encouraging. Sorry about that.
