About BaZ Da Don
BaZ, also known as Don B, emerged from the tumultuous streets of Flatbush, Brooklyn, where gunshots echoed and crack cocaine pervaded the environment. In his juvenile years, he roamed recklessly through these streets, encountering run-ins with local law enforcement that eventually led him to detention centers, group homes, Riker Island, and ultimately prison.
While Hip Hop had always been woven into BaZ's life, it wasn't until a fellow inmate in Elmira's reception suggested he write rhymes that he penned his first verse. Initially, it served as a means to escape the cacophony of sounds emanating from neighboring cells, drowning out the harsh reality that lingered in the minds of fellow inmates.
Upon his release, BaZ persisted in writing rhymes and crafting rap songs. Sharing his creations with a select few, an influential friend secretly arranged studio time for BaZ, resulting in the recording of three demo tracks and performances at notable clubs such as The Demerara, The Flamingo, and various West Village venues. Impressed, promoter Veronica took notice and offered to manage and promote him.
However, tragedy struck when BaZ's younger brother was murdered. Devastated, he lost focus, succumbed to the street's vices, and found himself entangled in a gun charge, leading to a year and a half behind bars. Undeterred, he continued refining his craft while incarcerated, drawing inspiration from musical icons like Rakim, Nas, Biggie Smalls, and Tupac.
Released in 2007, BaZ's life took another turn towards crime until a subsequent arrest landed him in state prisons for seven years. In 2008, a mutual acquaintance introduced him to RDB Productions, where he recorded various songs. This caught the attention of a representative from the independent record label Orpheus Music Group, expressing interest in signing BaZ. Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, the deal fell through.
Reflecting on his tumultuous journey, BaZ shared the profound lesson he gained from his experiences – the realization that enduring hardships is sometimes necessary to find the right path. This insight shapes BaZ's rap style, delivering a raw and unfiltered message that mirrors his own life. His music advocates for constructive alternatives to the illegal avenues prevalent in the hood, offering a perspective that resonates deeply with the struggles faced by today's youth, particularly young black males. BaZ believes in speaking to the youth in a language they understand, using his compelling and descriptive skills to entertain while delivering a crucial message about navigating harsh realities and making the hard choices necessary for survival.
