"A laid back, California Country vibe to this tune, delivered in a voice both gritty and relaxed, with a surprising pop influenced lift to the chorus. I could imagine hearing it on the radio while driving Highway in the late '70's"

Nice!

Gotta say, I like this. Not your average, predicable, auto-tuned, song. Kinda has a Replacements tone to the vocals and feel. A little sappy, but it's a love song, what do you want here? Well Done - i approve.

"Ain't Over Yet" by Ben Carr

Hey there Americana fans! If there's one thing I've learned we all seem to have in common, it's that we love,& appreciate great songwriters!! Ben Carr IS! I've never taken the time to write a review here,(til now),as this is the 1st time the music I've been sent, stopped my ear! "Aint' Over Yet" impressed me enough I made it through the first 10 seconds,(a feat in itself),& I actually listened to it all the way through, not just once, but 3+ times! Miraculous! He he he! Great story, vocal delivery, instrumentation,BGV's,song structure,& bridge hook!! Love that! This tune is well written, emotionally honest,& authentic, with an upbeat perspective on the trials of love! Anyone who's experienced that, can relate !! Looking forward to listening to more of this clearly talented artist's work! In a world where the means to put music out there,is accessible to all with internet access,(((sigh))), it's a real treat to happen onto someone of this quality! Bet you'll enjoy it too! Hope you keep sharing your songs with us,Ben Carr. Intimately familiar with the dedication, drive, determination,& nerve required to put out quality. Good on 'ya!! Hope to see you live someday soon! Awesome, total package, impressive.

This is my first review on N1M, wow, it will be a tough act to follow. I don't claim to be an authority on songwriting. What I have is I go to workshops in Nashville as well as attended the Austin Songwriters Symposium for the past 4 years. Everything I have learned from these come into play. The short intro, right into the imagery of what is happening. Great melody, chorus has a noticeable change that says here I am, modulation happened so smooth, bridge same thing. The total length under 3:30 as I was told by radio personalities in Austin. Title comes up often. Everything I try to put into my writing is there, I'm still working on applying these things. The only thing I could is in the first 2 lines, you "I" and establish who the character is, no need to use "I" again, the only input/opinion, but that is what I try to do in my writing. Excellent amp impressive, great music, strong vocals. Love it, I'm a fan from now on. Denny

Review of Ain't Over Yet

Hi Ben Enjoyed listening to Ain't Over Yet. I'm not a big country music fan but I think this song has cross over potential and could be popular with the folk rock listeners. I like your voice. Some background vocals would add to the song as would a pedal steel.

I like it

The only bad I can think of is that I feel like I've heard this song before. That being said, I like everything about the song. Vocals are good - production is very well done. It makes me want to hear another song by you (and I think that's a good thing about a song).

Why isn't this on the radio?

Good voice tone. Professional recording. Good hook. Good arrangement and turn-arounds. and bridge. Would be effective live. Good for dancing. Could extend for dancing live. Keep up the good work.

Ain't Over Yet

Ain't Over Yet by Ben Carr tells a good story about trying to turn a tough spot in a relationship around. The groove is solid and the musical ambiance compliments it all. The vocal performance is good and delivered with sincerity. Just my opinion, but I think the lyrics could be refined to create a bit more drama. For example, the line "don't do nothing we both will regret" could be written as a plea rather than a warning - like ' please don't do something we both will regret' Nice job, Ben!

Great Song

I love the message of this song. Too many people give up on relationships too soon. If only people could drop their prices and egos and remind their partners. The vibe is great, and it is catchy, and sweet.

yes

aint over yet review. this song is a strictly Americana piece in the highest sense of the word. everything sounds in Americana style as I said everything recalls the Americana genre. personally it is not my favorite genre but I can give you a musical judgment that is certainly positive because all that there must be in a Americana piece in your piece is therefore complimented and continues. good job

Nice beginning riff

Oh, I like your voice! Right off the bat that is nice. I like the beginning guitar riff and i like the lyrics to your song. I like this song it is easy to listen to and I would say that it is radio quality. I like the mix, the hook, and the whole arrangement of this tune. You sound really good the way you are singing and I like the climax of the song. You have a good vibe in this song. I think you've got some real talent here! No BS!

Dig it

Found the song to have a likeable melody and good beat, thought maybe there should be more dynamics in the musical accompaniment especially in the chorus...but still did enjoy and like the song in general

Ain't Over Yet ain't a bad song!

The intro has kept me here. The short intro has kept me here. Your first line is good, but I would use different words in the second phrase that ends in "lawn". (Maybe change it to, "Stayin' awake to dawn...") (? Or something else.) (The repetition of the two verb phrases "pacing across" seems amateurish.) I like your voice in this song. It doesn't sound forced and fake. Maybe add a little something extra to fill up a bit more of the space in your bridge. I like the high note(s) near the end, around 3:00. Nice song!

Mostly praise & a little constructive criticism

Immediately when the sing the song, I noticed the quality of production. It's exceptionally well recorded and produced. The instrumentation is spot-on. Recording technique is flawless, and the mix is perfect for the style of the song. Next, the composition caught my ear. The song does a great job of being hooky without being poppy...and isn't that the perfect balance? Chord progressions we're fairly standard with a couple of fun twists and turns to grab your ear. The theme of the song was a smart one. (I know things are going well right now. I know you're out. Don't do anything we might both regret. I'll be here when you get back), which of these makes my only constructive criticism. I felt like the theme of the song really opened itself up for some more creative use of storytelling, metaphor, and rhyme scheme. The rhymes were fairly predictable and the lyrics relatively basic. This one really had some untapped room to shine, and I think it's a good example of when you want to find a new and unique way to communicate a common feeling. Overall pretty pleased, and I'll keep listening.

Ain't Over Yet

I am still very new to writing reviews, so I am not certain if the requests are for the songs, the performance, recording quality, or production values. I have noticed that in reading other reviews, that any aspect seems to be fair game. So, I will just comment on everything that made an impression on me – good and not as good. I don't feel anything was bad. I read the only other review I saw. Honestly, without intending to be disrespectful of another person's opinion, I would remind you that all reviews are just that – opinions. I honestly would tell you to ignore anything that doesn't resonate with you. And that includes my comments. The other reviewer told you to change your arrangement. That wasn't very clear. Personally, I found the song arrangement to be very consistent with modern country music. The verses, pre-chorus, chorus and bridge were well balanced and flowing. And the harmony was well placed and nicely executed. As far as the performance, I feel you could segue into smoother musical transitions between the verse and chorus, etc. The best way I can explain this is to consider a musical way to simulate the turning of a page, as opposed to the abrupt changing of an image. This could be done as easily as adding a guitar line that spills over into the following transition. But, the placement and lift of the chorus and bridge are still very nice. As a guitar player, I would like to hear more guitar. Even though I love sparse arrangements, I felt, that, with your goal of country radio airplay, it could use more guitar presense. For example: Possibly consider something like staccato chord chops during the verse. Yeah, almost predictable, but commercial radio is about serving up some level of familiarity. Maybe even using that same guitar to cap off some of your current guitar lines in a call and response manner – panned to the other side of the stereo field. Finally, for my taste, there was a little too much repetition of a particular guitar line. I believe you used it 4 or 5 times in a row. It gave the appearance of a “cut and paste” decision to fill up space. Now, having said that, I really liked how you repeated the guitar intro and used it as an outro. I felt this was a recognizable way to say “get ready, we're done here”. As far as your singing performance, what the other reviewer felt lacked energy, I felt spoke volumes of emotional content. The song didn't suggest yelling, “Get your ass back here before you really screw up”. It was a plea for consideration not to “ throw the baby out with the bath water”. I feel you matched the vocals to the content. It's a fine song. I feel it has just as much chance of being taken on by a publisher, with functioning ears not clogged by “ the same ole', same ole”, as any other that will be accepted, come tomorrow morning. I am sure that a country sounding singer, a fatter sounding Tele, and a few familiar guitar lines will make it more appealing to many publishers. But the song, itself, is represented just fine. It's worthy to be recorded by someone other than yourself, should that be your goal. Wishing you the very best, Michael
