BILL started out at 13 DOING GIGS ONSTAGE. iN HIS TWENTIES in Portsmouth NH BILL PLAYED ALL THE BARS THERE AND PEOPLE ENCOURAGED HIM TO ADD TO HIS REPERTOIRE OF HUNDREDS OF SONGS, WITH COVERS BY ESTABLISHED ARTISTS, BUT AT ABOUT 25 YEARS OLD BILL DECIDED TO FOCUS MOST OF HIS ATTENTION ON WRITING. THE OVER 160 SONGS ON N1M FROM THE ALBUM TO THE SPOKEN WORD SELECTIONS SPAN THE ENTIRE TIME FROM BILL'S FIRST DECENT SONG COMPOSITION TO STUFF HE WROTE LITERALLY THE DAY BEFORE HE POSTED THEM on numberonemusic.com/billcoleandcornplanter LAST MONTH.
BILL FEELS THAT LORENZO PATERSON ON DRUMS, STEVE LAMPHIER ON BASS AND JUSTIN MURRAY ON LEAD GUITAR, ALSO CONSUMMATE ARTISTS, ARE THE ALSO THE REASON FOR THE ALBUM'S SUCCESS ON N1M. BILL'S SOLO PERFORMANCES ARE ALSO CLIMBING THE CHARTS. BILL WROTE "TAKE ANYMORE" IN 1977, BUT HE WASN'T INFLUENCED BY THE MUSIC OF THAT ERA AS MUCH AS HIS OWN INNER DRUMMER THAT WANTED TO DOCUMENT THE MUSIC THAT WAS POURING INTO BILL'S MIND AT THE TIME. IT TOOK OVER THIRTY YEARS BEFORE THE DAY CORNPLANTER GOT TOGETHER AT FROG CREEK STUDIOS IN TEXAS TO PRODUCE AN ALBUM THAT EXPRESSES BILL COLE'S ECLECTIC RANGE.
AN INTERESTING FACT IS THAT THOUGH BILL AND LORENZO (THE CORE OF CORNPLANTER) HAD MADE COUNTLESS STUDIO AND GARAGE "EXPERIMENTAL" RECORDINGS OVER THE YEARS, IT TOOK ALL THAT TIME BEFORE BILL FELT HE HAD ENOUGH MATERIAL WRITTEN AND ARRANGED THE TO HIS STANDARDS TO BEGIN PUBLISHING HIS SONGS. MANY, MANY AUDIENCES IN BARS, SALOONS AND CLUBS HAVE HEARD BILL SONGS AND ASKED HIM "WHO IS THAT SONG BY?" AND BEEN SURPRISED TO HEAR EVERYTHING THEY'D HEARD THAT EVENING WAS ORIGINAL. THOUGH BILL STOPPED TRYING TO PLAY THE COVER TUNE GAME A LONG TIME AGO, HE HAS KEPT LISTENING TO AND PLAYING THE MATERIAL OF OTHER ARTISTS THAT HE LIKES. PEOPLE SAY "PLAY SOME DEAD!!" Bill has been writing songs and performing from New England, to Colorado to Texas for over thirty years. He wrote his first song at thirteen and performs only original material. Bill has spent the last 5 years living in the Aspen Colorado area singing in music venues up and down the valley.
