About Bryan Wootan
Bryan wrote his first song on a Harmony classical guitar that his mother had given him when he was 11. It wasn’t much of a song, in fact, it didn’t even have chords as he couldn’t play yet. He just strummed the open strings and said some words that he had quickly jotted on a sheet of paper torn from a spiral notebook. A friend accompanied him on an old snare drum practice pad. It wasn’t memorable, catchy or even on pitch, but it was a beginning, but it was enough to launch a lifetime of writing and playing music. He still has that Harmony guitar and although it doesn’t see much use these days, it is always there as a reminder of where he started.
Growing up in a then-small-town in central Texas, he was immersed in country and folk music. Tunes from Denver to Haggard could be heard every weekend around the house when it was time to clean. He grew to appreciate the artists of the 60s and 70s, and many of those influences can be heard in his musical writing and ramblings today.
In his teens and early 20s, Bryan fell in love with electric guitar and rock music. But after a decade, he knew something was missing from his soul that he wanted to get back to, and that all started to take shape when he bought an old Yamaha acoustic guitar from the local music shop. He came back to more of the type of music he had grown up with, country and singer/songwriters, the fit was much more natural and after having a relationship of four years end, his broken heart provided plenty of inspiration for songs.
For over a decade, he wrote most of his music just for himself. During this hiatus from playing live music, he married and started a family. Never giving up on music, Bryan got back into writing again when he started the Furrows, an indie folk duo that played coffee houses and house parties in central Texas. After a few years, Bryan moved to Tennessee to pursue songwriting and recording. His style has matured and you will find bits of worship music in his works.
Bryan’s sound is all acoustic and heavily influenced by storytelling songwriters like Don McLean, John Prine, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, and Robert Earl Keane. Southern and Country influences are liberally incorporated in the mix adding to his own style and flavor.
