About Chris Kudela
Chris grew up in a small blue-collar town in central New Jersey, the youngest of 3 children who all loved music. He and his brother used to put on lip-sync concerts in their house with other kids from the neighborhood: "We used to geek out to Destroyer and Zeppelin II—we stuck one of those old neon green fish-tank algae scrapers in the door jamb of our closet, and that was our mic stand. We’d turn the top bunk of our bunk beds into a makeshift drum set, and tennis rackets and baseball bats were our guitars. I got to sing Love Gun once, and I remember thinking how cool it was! I couldn’t have been more than 6 at the time, and I didn’t even know what the lyrics meant—I just knew our parents were suspicious, and that made it feel even cooler. We had so much fun doing that stuff—we were true fanatics, and it really jump-started my love of rock and music in general."
Chris didn’t start thinking about making his own music, however, until college. While studying dramatic writing in New York City, he was given an odd one-off assignment by a visiting professor: write and perform an original song. He borrowed a friend’s old electric guitar, booked some time in one of the school’s piano rooms, and went to work. From then on, he was hooked, and he’s been working on the craft of songwriting ever since. He mainly performs as a solo artist, singing and playing acoustic guitar, but he’s also played in indie bands such as Blindfold the Sun and My Friend Autumn. His music is a blend of power pop, indie rock, and Americana, and some of his favorite artists include Michael Penn, Neil Finn, Pete Yorn, Old 97s, and The Replacements.
Chris recently released his 6-song EP, Write It Over, and it's been garnering some high praise: "Write It Over is a great project from this pop-rocker, and my former city of residence – Philly – ought to be proud of their native son," writes Shaine Freeman of I Am Entertainment magazine. The Indie Rock Cafe compares the experience of listening to Write It Over to "...driving down the boulevard with the top down on a beautiful summer day." The EP was recorded at Portrait Studios in northern NJ with producer Chris Badami, and it includes performances by some incredible musicians and great friends. A blend of the power pop and alt-country/roots rock that Kudela loves so much, the songs on Write It Over run the gamut from all-out anthems like Greenroom and TKO Chicago to raw, stripped-down offerings like the reimagined Ring of Fire and the bluesy, barroom romp Wine & Whiskey. Chris is currently touring in support of this project. For more information, visit link.
