David James is an artist and an engineer. His artwork spans everything from paintings, sketches, videography and photography to sculptures, jewelry, writing, and of course, music. He operated a recording studio for 15 years, and also served as a vocalist, producer, and studio musician. His favorite instruments are the saxophone and bass guitar, but he owns an assortment of instruments which includes a trumpet and acoustic guitars, keyboards, and even a hand drum and a didgeridoo. Though he is novice at best at most of them, he uses them to produce cross-genre music with an organic, live feel. As a vocalist and lyricist, he creates music that includes both singing and rapping, often steeped in indistinct symbolism, a genre he likes to call abstract hip-hop.
His time as an audio engineer led him to an education in electrical engineering, which in turn drove him into a career as a robotics engineer. He has a bit of a rags-to-middle-class story, having spent time homeless and broke with nothing but a GED, to eventually landing a tech job in autonomous systems and working on his doctorate. His breadth of experience gives him a unique perspective, and this perspective drives the content of his lyrics.
He has created hundreds of songs since he opened his first recording studio in 2005 but has only begun officially releasing them, and thus many of his 'new' releases may be over a decade old. At this time, he has no interest in public performances, and is simply trying to put his music catalog to work. However, if his music develops a following, that could easily change. As a robotics engineer, he's got some tricks up his sleeve that could make his performances very much worth witnessing.
