Thought I'd take a minute to tell you about this one. I went to school with a guy called Martin who was just naturally clever at pretty much everything, where the rest of us had to work at it. His teachers and parents pushed him into going to Oxford or Cambridge instead of where he wanted to go and he cracked under pressure, had a breakdown and never recovered. I lost contact with him for a long time but one of my close friends didn't.Unfortunately he died suddenly and I met martin again at his funeral. I asked him what he was doing and he said " nothing", which was all he had done in the intervening time.I thought then " what a waste" and sometime later wrote this song.
