Since the age of 4, Darryl Hayes can remember singing, but ask his mother and she will say it was much earlier than that, “my mother says that she used to hum in my ear and I would hum back on tune, this was when I was 6 or 7 months old.”

Having been born into a musical family, he has always loved music. One of his biggest influences was The Temptations Movie. Retelling the story of the legendary Motown group, the film was a success when it debuted in 1998. In fact, winning an Emmy and considered a classic among musicians. “I remember watching it so many times,” Darryl states, “I did my best to mimic them, especially David Ruffin.”

Perhaps it is from Ruffin that Darryl got his drive to make passion the key ingredient in his own music. “There was a lot of passion in music back in the day,” he states, “in Detroit, there weren’t a lot of options. You were either singing or working in the plant. So a lot of those singers were singing for their life. I still want that sound, like I’m singing for my life.”

Perhaps that urgency comes from the fact that for years, Darryl Hayes avoided his gift, “I went to college, I moved out of state, at one point I was working in a restaurant,” he recounts, “a friend asked me if I could do anything in the world, what it would be. Music was the first thing to come to mine.” It is from the revelation that Darryl got his performance name (expired link).

A play on his given name, which he was never a big fan of, the acronym came to him when he looked back on his life and wasn’t satisfied, he wanted to live his passion and live with no regrets. “I wanted my life to matter, to have done something special. I thought to myself, Don’t Ever Regret Your Life. It also happened to be an acronym that sounds like my given name.”

And the 29-year-old performer has not looked back since.

A very active singer-songwriter, he is preparing his debut project COMPLICATED the mixtape and he isn’t the only one in his family who frequents the studio. “My mother is my biggest musical influence and she just released a gospel album last year.” Also present in his sound is the influence of other powerful vocalists like Ray Charles and Jill Scott.

In today’s music whether rap or R&B, you hear a lot about money or sex, but very little about love. For (expired link). his job as a singer is to be a storyteller, “Singing replaces things that people can’t say,” he says insightfully, “I speak for men, if you have something you want to say to your girl, there is a song for you. If you miss her, if you can’t live without her, my album should speak for you.”

When he isn’t singing, this homebody likes to cook, play pool, and spend time with his children. But, his career brings him great satisfaction, “I’m very appreciative about everything. As far as my music and how hard I work and how hard I do my music, that’s how I show my appreciation to people. No regrets.”
