About Don Bowen
Trying to put 79 years of performing into a few words is most difficult. so I am leaving out the beginnings which was in 1942 with my twin brother at 3 years old singing in war bond shows in Baltimore Maryland. link choir, stage shows with Curtain Callers, for the Baltimore recreation Dept. Playing harmonica in Baltimore Restaraunts and singing in various contests etc. I began writing songs as a youth but did not start keeping track until the 50's, I went through the service competing in tops in blues and playing and singing wherever whenever. during those years I also wrote and put on three stage shows, two in the service and one with curtain callers which I co wrote with my brother and mother..
In 1970 I went to New York and Interval Music published 8 of my songs, following that I had some more published by rebel records in Maryland.. Then started the
group Jonathan Playing the Washington DC Military and club Circuit.
I did a show in Louden County Va' with Hank Snow and Martha Carson when the Grand Ole Oprey went on the road.. RCA had some interest in a song I wrote called "What Will You Do Now She's Gone" the song went with 2 others to the head of country Music and eventually was turned down by Chet Adkins in lieu of going forward with" Help Me Make It Through The Night". After the group Jonathan broke up I formed another group called Calico and then eventually Cheyenne Autumn.. All of them were successful and were all known for their vocals. This carried me through into the 80's then sang in a duo with Liz Shaw on piano and me singing. when that ended I ran a talent agency tat ended when my partner sold out. Got out of the business and then in about 1998 got back into singing and then developed my little home studio and began to write again, I began playing as a single act around the Midlands of South Carolina. I retired from doing gigs a year ago due to treatments for link me out, Now I am active, still writing and recording and going back over some older songs to record them and put them out to the public for comments. that's about as short as I can make a lifelong career and love of music.. Many events along the way have been left out as opportunities came and Just did not work out. Strange link, but I love it and will be active till I cannot anymore. the lord has left my voice young so i will continue to sing if able..
Some of the people that I have performed with are as follows...From the group Jonathan, TC Howard, Bass, Joe Howard, Drums, Jonathan Firstenberg, Guitar, Patty Noell Vocals, Judy Daley, Vocals and piano. in the group calico, Ernie Ellison, Bass, Joe Howard Drums, Dave Olsen guitar,. In Cheyenne Autumn, Jeff Bowen Drums, David Miner twelve string guitar, Danny Davis Bass, Phil Falcone Synthesizer, Nick Adde Lead Guitar, Liz Shaw Grand Piano. Also others I
should mention Bil Seigman, Singer Songwriter, Bert Braddock Keyboards and guitar ,All these musicians were or are talented guys and girls. So as bugs Bunny would say Dave Miner, Liz Shaw and Bert Braddock ;are all making music in heaven" Maybe we can hook up again sometime in another link All Folks!
