Keep Your Head To The Sky review

You have taken me back to era of the greatest music to ever hit the airwaves! Your sound is so much a combination of early Motown and all the soulful artists of the 70's & 80's disco era. Please continue doing what you are doing. As far as any suggestions, I cannot find anything that I didn't like in this production. Not knowing when you recorded this, I know there are many new approaches to the mix and you could try a new mix, if you wanted to take a chance. But truthfully, the retro sound that you have is a sweet sound to my ears. Keep it up!

Nice clear recording, good mix but I think on the vocals they seem a bit too Hot, maybe ists just personal taste but the bass could have been more predominate....The guitar really stood out so it maybe could come down just a smidge. I really think if the bass was more predominate it would fill up the background alot. Keys would have been a nice touch, maybe some gospel b3 or strings to fill some of the holes...Keep up the good work, Keep your head to the Sky!!!!!!

Strong band and producer, hearts in the right place, but issues with vocals

The Donna Walton Gospel Network's recording of "God Bless You" by Dra Hill is dedicated to all the members of our armed forces serving around the world, and based on Psalm 121 ("I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help . . .") The band is tight and the arrangement is sophisticated, and that fact is announced right in the intro, with the band playing in unison to a truly creative time signature. All the players are good, with the lead guitar shining. The lead vocal comes in after a few words of scripture, singing in a soul falsetto, a la Smokey Robinson. Unfortunately, he doesn't quite pull it off. The falsetto is pitchy and not quite sturdy enough to carry the lead, though he does have his moments of brilliance. The lyrics get lost in the band. The lead vocal would need to be mixed a little louder to avoid this, but I think it is already as loud as it can effectively go. It just ends up sounding thin. Then when the female vocals come in on the chorus, they too are pitchy, and it's even more noticeable when the band drops out and they sing a capella for a few bars. I like the hook, "Keep your head to the sky." This is a nice visual image, that goes along beautifully with the scripture the song is based on, and would actually make a really good title for the song. "God Bless You", although it is the purpose of the song, is a little too generic, and doesn't capture the song's essence as fully as "Keep your head to the sky." To sum it all up, your hearts are in the right place, and I pray God's blessings on your further efforts. I love the band and the mix. You have a lot going for you. Keep making music for the Eternal. Hope to sing with you one day, around the Throne of Glory.

Remarkable Song with deep feel

One typical feature of contemporary christian songs are direct messages and this one is a great example. The lyrics encapsulating the beliefs or ideals and touching the heart. Engaging vocals and impressive chorus! Really funky rhythm e-guitar and lead guitar are playing the main role in this song and stand out in this recording. The drums and bass lines make the song complete. Virtuos e-guitar solos bringing great feel into the music. Dra Hill produced an outstanding song very good mixed and overall perfect mastered. It´s a quintessence of Gospel with soul music elements influenced by christian songwriting. This song could be a radio hit and I´m sure you will also like to add him. Let others know your recommedation.

In MY Opinion

Greetings, Thank you for choosing me to review your work, I count it an honor to be included in such a task. My hat is off to you and anyone willing to step out and share their gift, talent and love of music to the public. Be it a musician, singer, song writer, actor and so-on. I myself, via 40 some years of experience in the fields, on the road, in the studio, radio, TV, video, and management, consider myself to be a seasoned musician, singer, song writer, studio-sound tech/engineer/ owner/operator, stage manager, find it sometimes hard/difficult and perhaps not even fair to sit in a seat, voicing My Opinion concerning another's creative efforts. Especially in certain genres of music I am not all that familiar with concerning very important elements that make up and meet the required standards to justify the various levels of ratings and grades. So, in saying ALL that, I will limit myself to MY Opinion concerning the quality of the work according to My ears, and the standards I have been familiarized with thru-out the years. I hold to the old - saying " Beauty Is In The EAR of The Beholder ... LOL. The sound quality of the recording over-all is very crisp and bright and clear, I really enjoyed the message in this song.Think about a music solo break to step away from vocals for a short period in future works. Vocals are smooth and natural, sort of - down to earth as they say, and extremely peaceful. The mix levels let me know who was still in charge of this song. Very easy to sit back and listen to. I mean no offense in any part, I myself take all feedback and use it as a tool toward my next project. I pray you feel the same way. Either way, I say to you, keep doing what you do, keep kicking and enjoying what you do. I tell folks all the time for many years. When it stops being FUN, then it's time to stop, and stand back and think about what we are doing, why we are doing it, how we are doing it, what we and others are getting out it. Is it what we want, and how we want it. IF NOT. what are willing to do from there? Thank you again for asking MY OPINION. Johnny

Good voice

This song has an interesting mix of different kinds of music, from soul to a sophisticated gospel, fast apt for a music club. You have a beauty voice and the rhythm is good, enough to dance.

Keep Your Head To The Sky

Ok the music is ok but the vocals (the spoken word/rap) is a bit boring.. The vocals are not very "upflifting" either. I understand the meaning of making the music to spread a message but it's not my favorite

Keep Your Head To The Sky

Let me begin by letting you know how I will be addressing your song. I review from a commercial standpoint…..which is to say how would your composition fair if you were trying to place your song with a publishing firm? The other alternative would be from you as artist. If that were the case then one either likes or dislikes what you have produced. That is not my agenda as I stated earlier. Seeing as how this is a cover ...I'll deal with the production and performances on the track. If it were me I might looking at the balance of the guitar in relationship to the bass and the drums. There is plenty of information (Regarding bass & Drums) but they do not currently add the needed bottom end and punch..... The guitar level feels high in the overall mix. All of the parts are interesting and played well...It's a question of balancing the mix. Another issue you might look at would be some of the intonation on the vocals. At times they feels a little pitchy. Remember that you are competing against everyone.....there is so much easy access to music theses days that you might consider how you stack up against every one else in your genre of choice. A great informative exercise would be listening to your favorite artists..... A / B their version as compared to your version. The track overall works.....Keep up the good work. RW

Good Job!

I like the production sound can't go wrong with the classics if can nail it. Good job!! I can feel the heart in this showing you put in some dedicated work in this classic. I like how you put your own touch to it, I can dig it!!! Sounds like the studio vibe was awesome . More artist should study the roots of their culture of art more to be better at their own art. Keep up the good work and stay in the lab creating new material to stay fresh and on your toes. If you're ever looking for a hip hop collaboration hit me up I'm versatile. Peace!

Awesome blues sound with a hint of Motown music

Blues with a flavor of classic Motown sound really gets ahold of my soul and the rhythm grabs you to listen to the sweet soul vocals with a message of hope. I especially like how it was dedication Ted to those who serve us in military.. great job,!!!!

pleasant song!

With the premise that, in Italy, we don't grow up with this music so I don't know much about it (but what can I say, gospel choirs for me are the best singing schools), I've found this song very pleasant, smooth, almost relaxing. I couldn't understand the lyrics much, but I think they flow very well. The voice is great , particular, not too energic (and it's not a defect, just a characteristic), it's probably what gives this "chilled" feeling. I might consider a solo for your next work, just to give more dynamic. Great job!

inspirational vocally

my thoughts

Thanks for sharing your music. WOW, definate old school vibe. Sly and the Family for sure. Love your style, The bass has a 70's feel to it which matches your style. Actually the whole band has that feel. And thats what your going for. So in my opinion, everything works. There is 1 spot about a third of the way through lead vocals are off just a bit and you buried it with the guitar and bg vocals. Overall good job, just dont settle. God Bless
