I hate that we've all cowered into our predetermined socioeconomic/racial groups. That means that we'll never have contact with anyone different from ourselves. It means that we'll never hear anything that challenges the way we see the world. It means that we'll never hear anything that we don't like and we'll never grow. How sad. We need each other. We need the differences. Not that we should dwell on the differences. We have much more incommon. We should be coming together out of love, but I can't blame folks for being afraid of the dominant culture. "Essie's Song" is about that coming together. That deep appreciation. Not only was (she's passed on) she loving but she also had a strength that took knowing her well not to be intimidated by her. She was almost 6 ft tall.
