Born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Geary Nelson was tutored by his father Alfred who was a country singer, and performed the first time with his father on stage at the age of 11, playing bass guitar. It was not long before Geary had his own band and played the local Teen clubs in the Chicago area. As a Teenager Geary’s local band the “Panik” won many band competitions, leading to two (2) Record Label Deals for the young group of teenagers. They went on to perform with many famous Artists & Bands who toured through Chicago. The “Panik” performed on Chicago’s TV Stations many times, and also did some tours through the South and Performed on the famous “Dance Party” TV show out of Memphis, TN.
Geary’s father Alfred (Red) as they called him because of his bright Red hair, show Geary his first set of chords to play on the guitar. His Dad showed him the chords E, A, and B which is a standard chord structure. Geary’s Dad told him when you can play those three chords smoothly switching from one chord to another I will show you another set. Geary’s said his Dad was surprised when Geary returned a few days later and said he was ready for the next set of chords. Geary’s Dad was shocked to see how quickly his son mastered those three little chords so fast, and that was it. By the time Geary had played his guitar for one year he was able played bass in his Dad’s band when the bass player could not play, and Geary started his own 3 piece band with two other neighborhood friends of his. Geary quickly was playing lead guitar and his first band was called the “Titles” they played school sock hops, Geary’s band had no singers so they played all instrumental songs. This was the beginning of a lifelong career in music.
Geary started writing songs as a young boy, and continues today, writing and performing his songs. On his original compositions, Geary performs all the lead vocals, backup vocals, and instruments, except some occasional keyboard performances by his wife Peggy on his song recordings. Geary loves to write songs that have interesting melodies and rhythms. He tries to focus on what sounds interesting or “catchy” as they would say, so he spends a lot of time in his home studio working on writing, arranging and mastering his original songs.
Geary States: As a songwriter, I would love to have other singers or bands perform my songs, but it is difficult sometimes to match a song to an artist today. I do have a large catalog of unpublished songs that I would love to have other artists perform.
