About HipHopFreaks
Needing a wheelbarrow to carry away his awards at the local Oudtshoorn hip-hop awards ladies and gentleman The Hip Hop Lovers Informant brings you Farren Campher, Oudtshoorn‟s very own reigning hip-hop king.
Born and bred in the Klein Karoo Farren was inspired by old school hip-hop acts like 50 Cent as well as local acts like Junant Bozza Petersen, which ultimately drove him to write and record his own rhymes. Although times were tough he persevered by making the best of each opportunity he got, when he needed a mic he simply rewired his phone speaker to act as a mic, “Although the quality was bad, I was still able to record and I‟m glad I never gave up when things got difficult”. Junant has also had a major impact on him, “Yeah Junant was the Afrikaans rapper whose music made me believe in to do what you love, to always look for improvement and to always be humble towards the next person or artist”.
Farren‟s style of hip-hop is also unique, but at the same time you can hear that he has roots in the Cape, his delivery is very intense and he has a very polish act when he steps on stage, “In the history of hip- hop, I think that I would be on the short list of most talented rappers. I‟m able to bring out emotional and psychological heartache in rap. It‟s not difficult to hear the intensity of feeling in a song like „Die Jeug‟, I wrote that song because I know that the youth is the future of our country and to this day „Die Jeug‟ is still my number one track. My music is all about sending a massive positive message out to the youth that is very important to me”.
One has to admire this guy‟s passion for both hip-hop and youth, “through my music I hope to also fight drugs and crime and all the negative stuff that goes along with street life, I want to bring hip-hop back in the spotlight so that the youth will be inspired once more, the youth must show support and let go of their street mentality and know that life is what you can make of it. My plan is thus to breathe life into local hip-hop once again and make it entertaining”. What an inspiration, he is absolutely a selfless artist that is not just looking out for himself and his own grind, but is also willing to lend a hand in someone else‟s grind. You go Farren and show them what the arts are really about, for the love of hip-hop!
Farren is happily married with a wife and young daughter, but that doesn't stop him from performing, he is very active with youth shows in towns all around Oudtshoorn and is also planning a massive bash with various guest artists to support one of his hero‟s, Junant Bozza Petersen‟s, CD launch the 27th of February. He has also worked with local celebs in the past like Junant and Meli Grey and carried away the best male rapper award at the Oudtshoorn hip-hop awards in 2014 and 2015 and says that he aims to walk away with that prise again in 2016, because he already has a firm support base in Oudtshoorn.
His advice for aspiring artists will be, “keep doing good and do what you do best, also don‟t forget to always stay humble as an artist, and know at the same time that there is always room for improvement no matter who you are”. Lastly I think there is a marketing for local hip-hop, but for that to succeed we must first support each other as local artists, it doesn't matter if you have made it or not every artist should support the next one, and so we will grow bigger and bigger to win this battle, as long as we keep doing Hip Hop we can never ever lose, May local hip-hop be blessed”!
