Immigrating to Canada, at the tender age of four, suffering through the impact of childhood sexual abuse and living in the child welfare system provided, Ingrid (expired link), with a lot of inspiration for writing poems about her journey. These poems would later become her first published, local, best selling, book of poetry in 2005 that would eventually inspire original songs that she would record and perform live with the help of her band, of over 9 years, The Funky Fresh Crew.
Ingrid (expired link) is a Jamaican/Canadian, published poet, singer-songwriter, social activist, spoken word recording artist and short filmmaker.
Active as a multi-disciplinary artist since, July 2005, Johnson is a unique artist with musical depth, a versatile background, and an approach that’s as rich as it is meaningful. Chosen by The Manitoba Women' s Advisory Council and Mentoring Artist' s for Women's Art (MAWA) in October 2011 to be honored in a government publication: Women in The Arts. Artists Working for Social Change. Ingrid D. Johnson's company, In The Closet Productions, mission and vision to be "a voice for the voiceless" ( by using original music and art to help raise awareness and funding for important social issues, like the impact of childhood sexual abuse) was confirmed. Previously, Johnson's work has been promoted on Bravo! news, CBC national radio and news, CTV news, Shaw (expired link). The Winnipeg Sun, The Winnipeg Free Press, Hot 103, CJOB. In the past, Johnson, has also gained opportunities to perform her music live and speak at MEOW CON, The Objective, The Canadian Red Cross RespectED: Violence and Abuse Prevention program, KLINIC, and Voices Manitoba Youth In Care Network. In addition to temporarily acting as the spokesperson for the clients of The Laurel Centre (a community resource centre that counsels sexually abused women with addictions) in 2010.
Most recently, Johnson, has performed at The 2017 Canada Games (Athlete's Village), and sung the Canadian national anthem at a Piston's hockey game in Steinbach. Previously, she presented a pilot of her songwriting workshop, "Writing Through The Pain," to new immigrants (2016) and youths in the child welfare system (2015). In addition to performing with her band at The Winnipeg Fringe Festival (2015) The Bell Tower Cafe (2015 & 2016), The Steinbach Summer Festival (2015 & 2016), The Grant and Wilton Coffee House (2012), Happy Mike's Coffee House (2015) and several other events.
Always willing to use her personal story to uplift and encourage others going through adversity, Johnson, has also done public speaking engagements with live music concerts for youths at The Manitoba Youth Centre (2015) and received opportunities to showcase with her band in Austin Texas (2013), Nashville, TN (2016) and Pennsylvania (2017).
