The chords are essential to laying any type of melody down and the melody is the song really. Your melody, the key in which your vocals are dictates the chords you will play and the musical composition around the melody including any other instrumentation with drums being the exception. I felt that the musical aspect of the song was missing, also you could do some more work on the vocal track.
