I wanted to take the time and say thanks to 2 other mentors who have played a big part in my music
career over all one has passed on may he rest in peace the late Roger Troutman and I am sure I am
not the only one their are countless others.
Second the brother of the late Roger Troutman,Terry Zapp Troutman and to this day continues to do
just that love you my brother he has shown to me dreams do come true let's get hyped for that next

Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner, frontman for the hit-making funk music band the Ohio Players, has died. He was 69 years old.

The Ohio Players, known for their brassy dance music and flamboyant outfits, topped music charts in the 1970s with hits such as "Love Rollercoaster," "Fire," "Skin Tight" and "Funky Worm."

On Monday morning, a spokeswoman for Newcomer Funeral Home in the Dayton, Ohio, suburb of Kettering said that the family hadn't scheduled any public services. There was also a posting about his death on his current band's Facebook page. No other information has been released about his death.

Born in Hamilton, Ohio, Bonner teamed up in the 1960s with core members of a group called the Ohio Untouchables to form the Ohio Players. The band had a string of Top 40 hits in the mid-1970s and continued to perform for years after that. He had remained active in recent years with a spin off band called Sugarfoot's Ohio Players.


"Humble yet charismatic, soft-spoken and of few words, the weight of his thoughts, lyrics and music has influenced countless other artists, songs and trends," stated a posting attributed as an "official family announcement" on the Facebook page of Sugarfoot's Ohio Players. "He will be missed but not forgotten as his legacy and music lives on."

I wanted to take the time to remember my friend and mentor Leroy Sugarfoot Bonner of the Ohio Players he was a very fun guy to hangout with and make music with as well and will be missed
he was a true music maker I remember some of his last words weeks before his passing.
He said to me James Jr you are a talented young man and I would make a record with you anytime
at any place and you should keep the funk music alive never let the world forget it.
Right after we recorded my song Bad Girls (feat) Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players he is no longer with

Mound Bayou, Mississippi born singer, songwriter, and producer James Jr. remakes former collaborating associates, The Isley Brothers, classic hit “Don’t Say Goodnight” with a “Zapp” twist. The original version of this track reached No.1 on the R&B charts during 1980.

James Jr. keeps and the tempo and feel pretty much the same but ‘re-tunes’ the lead vocal with the Zapp work over and made famous by Roger Troutman’s talkbox. Younger folks today will think of it as the T-Pain vocoder sound, but this stuff walked straight out of the funky 80s. So who better than James Jr. to take it back to its roots.

However it was about time that this R&B classic was brought back to the neighborhood. And James Jr. basically gives the track a smooth, clean groovecentric flavor. It’s been said that there was a shortage of high quality R&B music.

However correct or incorrect that is, this song would stand out as a strong example of the contrary to that point of view. James Jr. vocals here summon up emotions of love, joy, and sensual longings, just as much as the original version did. He knows how to express his feelings.

“Don’t Say Goodnight” shows James Jr. versatile style and his way of delivering a message through music, regardless of whether it’s an original or somebody else’s song. He sounds just as comfortable here as he does in any of his previous releases.

This mixture of classic R&B sounds with the production values of today really works on many levels. This is a great combination of message and music that I highly recommend from an artist that has been around the block…more than once!
