About John DeYoung

John DeYoung John DeYoung has been writing, recording and performing music nearly all of his life. As an adolescent he sang in choirs and ensemble groups at church and in high school, and played folk and rock music for various functions. Throughout his career he has played a variety of styles of music in venues from small intimate clubs and private functions to concert stages. In the 1970’s John began playing professionally and spent many years making his living in the club circuit from San Diego to Santa Barbara. John has opened concerts and shared stages with the likes of Missing Persons, John Hiatt, Marc Cohn, Maria McKee, Debra Davis, Arlo Guthrie, David Lindley, Jesse Colin Young, Albert Lee, and many others. John completed his first solo album in 1997, entitled “Envisage”, for which he played all the parts, sang all the vocals and recorded and engineered it himself. In January of 1999, John formed the musical group called “Naked Hearts” and they have recorded two albums, and continue working on new material for future albums. In 2006, John composed and recorded music for the play “The Great Election,” as well as other sound tracks for John Stark Productions.

In March of 2011 John immersed his full creative efforts into “Johnny Canuck”, a musical play and one-man show written by Jovanka Bach. While preparing for the role of “Johnny Canuck”, John studied and recorded the traditional folk songs and original lyrics written into the play and composed the music for eight of the plays sixteen songs. These recordings resulted in a soundtrack album of the plays collection of songs that includes one of John’s original songs translated into French. The show opened in August of 2011 at the University of New Mexico’s Experimental Theatre and was then taken to Canada in September and October of 2011, playing at theatres in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto. All of the performances have received favorable reviews.
