About KoKoKo

KoKoKo is a very special group. Why? We only learn by our ears (we listen) and play from our hearts. We never use any sheet music. It gives us more room for improvisation and arrangements. KoKoKo came together in January, 2012. We played in different groups, but after official concert, we just went on stage to do a little jamsession. And it felt sooooo good together :) We decided that we should make it work. And it works. What makes us a little bit different from other groups is that only some of us have really learned in music school. 3 of our members learned to play an instrument on their on. And so we never learn any tune from notes. We only learn by ears and play from our hearts. It gives us more room for improvisation and arrangements. Who are the members? Marta - violin/vocals; Gajane - violin/vocals; Meelis - guitar/vocals/cajon; Karen - guitar; Indrek - double bass. What are we playing? Our main focus is traditional Estonian music, as our traditional dances and songs. What is Estonian traditional dance? It is flatfoot. We also have reinlender, polka, waltz ect. Ofcourse we play traditional music from other countries too, like Sweden, Norway, Austria.. But our main focus will always be Estonian folk.
Where did our group name come from? Well... the First Ko- goes to Meelis and Marta (father and daughter), who come from Konguta. The second Ko- goes to Karen, who is from Kolga-Jaani, the third Ko- goes to Gajane, who lives in Kohila. So we get KoKoKo :) We also have Indrek, who comes from Ylenurme, but we haven't figured it out, how to put him in :). We have given many concerts in Southern-Estonia and also we took part of a big folk festival in Mooste, Moisekatsi Elohely. The festival is one of a kind among all the festivals we have in Estonia, because it contains a competition. Competition means, that we are given an old Estonian folksong (usually it's only 4 measures and then 20 rows of words), and all the participants must make an arrangement. This year we won 2 special prizes: first for great ensemble work and excellent use of the instruments, and second for festivals patrons favorite arrangement. So we keep going and we would really like to spread Estonian beautiful traditions around the world. Thank you! Aitäh
