Writing the song “Do You Feel That Heat” meant an awful lot to me because I wrote it just after my youngest son, a Marine, went to Iraq in 2003 to end the reign of Saddam Hussein. Those poor young men went weeks without bathing or any other proper amenities that we experience every day. Needless to say his entire Battalion was on security lock down and my wife and I could hardly breathe for a couple of months until we were able the hear from him.
Again I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for gifting me with a portion of your day and your life. Bless each and every one of you!

I turned 18 while in Army Basic Training at Ford Ord, California. Advance Individual Training consisted of learning to climb telephone poles for Signal Corps duties. It turns out the unit where I was assigned in Vietnam had no poles to climb. So I wound up, “a jack of all trades, and a master of none”, as my Master Sergeant once called me. Skipping forward a few months has me turning 19 years old in Central Highlands, Pleiku, Vietnam during the year of 1968.
For all of us soldiers doing the fighting, it sometimes seemed that there was no clear objective or goal coming from our leaders in (expired link). Our Commander in Chief, Lyndon B. Johnson was not well-liked in the rank-and-file military at all. We would often encounter attacks, ambushes, and booby traps at any place or time. It was a conflict where territory changed hands frequently, people moved freely and their political loyalties were often unclear. The very people that performed post-unit services, ie: laundry or manual labor during the day time would be humping “mojos” (mortars) through the jungle at night. One lesson dearly learned was that military victories do not necessarily achieve political goals without the stomach to follow through on the battlefield. From where we (soldiers) sat on those battlefields, we were winning. Until we got the order to retreat. Almost every time. And those orders came from “dumb-asses” sitting in (expired link). who had no eyeballs on our conflicts and no experience whatsoever to handle them even if their eyeballs were right in front of us. Okay … got that off my chest.
