As nice as it is to see the “white stuff” disappearing, lately life has felt more like my tattoo in that all seasons seem to be happening at once in this tiny corner of the world. There have been days of colours changing and dying leaves, a devastating cold at times, followed by newness and the warmth of love’s light. It’s all happening… I am alive. And I don’t know how else to summarize what that is like for now, so there will be a long blog coming (eventually). Until then, here are a few bits of news to update you with: Artists in the Schools I’ve worked with Grade 1-8 students at Sigurbjorg Steffanson School in Gimli and Van Walleghem School in Winnipeg for a total of five weeks in January/February. In those five weeks, we wrote 24 songs! Some of them are available on the website, in case you’d like to peruse. Do you know of a School who might be interested in my “Creative Expression in Songwriting” program through Artists in the Schools? If so, please send them to the Community page of my Official Site for more information and to be directed to the Manitoba Arts Council website to apply before Mid-May. The Garrison We’re nearing the end of “Phase 1” of the Pilot Project for this new Community Music and Arts Program. Many Winnipeggers of all ages have participated in playing, singing, writing, jamming, learning a new instrument, making visual art and engaging with our great group. There are still a few days left where you too can join us at Red Road Lodge (631 Main at Logan), with a final Open Mic and Art Sharing event happening the evening of March 31st (Saturday) at The Edge Gallery. All events are free with food and bus tickets provided. All are welcome, regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, mistakes, skill, talent or any other potential barrier. You don’t even have to participate the first time… just come down and enjoy the music and creativity. This project was named after and pays tribute to Winnipeg musician, BJ Garrison. If you know someone near either of these regions, please let them know we’re heading their way! New and older songs will come out to play - my heart is so looking forward to sharing them, surrounded by cool people. Down the Road Next month brings my return to McNally Robinson’s Prairie Ink Cafe (on the 20th) and to Norway House (for 3 weeks) to write songs with students at Jack River School and beyond the immediate horizon are more good things to come. Those new songs I mentioned are developing into a new project that has the potential to develop further throughout this year. I haven’t started any seeds yet this Spring, but feel a strange crop of perennials will rise up and carry me through ’til I know where this strange season (of all seasons at once) is heading. And I’m not alone… many friends and family members that I love are in similarly strange seasons of joy and despair, of “enough is enough” and/or simultaneous “yin and yang”. We are wondering what we are growing. All I know is that things are about to get really good and the best is yet to come. The blanks will be filled in as our collective story unfolds… Hope yours is doing so somewhat peacefully and with the right community around you. We’re all in this together and I have never been more appreciative for the people I get to love and be near, throughout my life.
