About Marlon McClain
Marlon McClain Is Back, Making Every Friday a Funky One!
Friday. It’s the day that folks around the world are striving towards every other day of the week. It’s a time to let down, wind down—and get down. And should you find yourself missing the ideal musical accompaniment to make your Fridays funky, Marlon McClain has the solution.
Marlon’s new EP, Funky Fridays Vol. 1, is packed tight with crisp grooves designed to make you move and celebrate. This newest offering in the singer/multi
instrumentalist/producer’s wide-ranging
catalog is a strictly feel-good affair. Funkateers will recognize Marlon’s name from his decades of accomplishment as a guitarist,
keyboardist, and songwriter with the likes of funk-fusion band Pleasure, Motown electro-funk trailblazers The Dazz Band, and cutting-edge synth-funk outfit Shock. He’s continued touring and releasing solo albums blending the best of these influences over the past decade. The new Funky Fridays Vol. 1 EP is a rock-solid encapsulation of his talents as a composer, groove-maker, and performer.
Says Marlon of the Funky Fridays concept, “I’ve been posting guitar jam videos on Facebook for the past four years—mostly on Fridays. I call them ‘Funky Friday’ videos. It’s a way for me to have fun and let the funk out naturally while playing guitar in my home studio. A lot of friends started asking me to make an album, so I decided to create a series of EP’s based on ‘Funky Fridays,’ using the fan responses as inspiration.” Five full-length tracks and three interlude segments make up Funky Fridays Vol. 1. The opening slinky guitar strains of “Funkin 4” quickly give way to the in-your-face, P-funk-inspired “Mac &
Cheese,” a jam replete with spicy horns and slabs of contagious electric guitar riffing. Next up, the sleek glide of “Nuthin’ But The Funk” showcases Emanuel Officer’s rousing vocals over a fired-up arrangement of dynamic keyboards, kickin’ bass, and a take-no-prisoners vocoder breakdown by EZ Roc.
Marlon notes, “My producer, Ralph B. Stacy, suggested that I work with Emanuel on ‘Nuthin’ But The Funk.’ He lent so much talent to the song. EZ Roc is my buddy from The Bar-Kays. He’s the master of the talk box.”
The pace is slowed briefly for the mellow instrumental number, “Think Of U,” giving Marlon a chance to highlight the deeply honed craft of his acoustic and electric guitar playing. He then drives the tempo up again with the swingin’, head-nod-inducing “Say What,” propelled by the irresistible bass line of renowned session player Al Turner. The vibe is changed up once more with the laid back swagg of “Take Your Time,” making way for the closing guitar strumming and bumpin’ percussion stabs of the title cut, “Funky Friday.” Marlon affirms that creating Funky Fridays Vol. 1 was a labor of love from start to finish. “We had such a great time vibing back and forth on ideas. I got to work with musicians all in the spirit of the funk. I think fans are really going to like what they hear.”
