Muertos Fest came and went. It was a beast this year. Lots of work, lots of sweat, lots of long days and short nights. But things went very well. Here's what some folks said: The San Antonio Report, Parade Magazine, My San Antonio, San Antonio Current. 135,000 Attendees.

San Antonio Veterans Day up next….

I'm getting going on the grant stuff. Got some rehearsals lined up and been drilling a couple of the tunes with a couple of the players. Got one tune done, two others started… lots to do still.

Oh yeah…. Waltz for Tom, a newly released single was picked for Song of the Day by (expired link) for Oct 9th. That's pretty cool.

But the question on everyone's mind is… is there new stuff??? Why yes there is!!!!

NEW NEWS:

Happy Independence Day to my fellow 'Muricans!

Summer time and the living is easy... finally. The "slow" season is here. Although that has taken on it's own definition. I think I just need to call it the "Music Season." It's hot, hot, hot here in South Texas and the event season has ground down to a crawl. Although pre-production meetings for Dia de los Muertos have appeared on the calendar. Anyway, this means I'm back on the sax and getting to some postponed label projects as well as chores for, you know, regular life: oil changes, mowing, helping out around the house and sleeping in! Even had time to make it to my niece's wedding and spend a little time with family. And I squeezed in an interview on Military Broadcast Radio for the show Tracer Rounds which was pretty cool: (expired link)

On the music side of things: I'm greatly enjoying my jazz gigs. I've got some fabulous players and we're swinging hard and fast, more notes for your jazz dollar. And I've picked up a few weeks of Tuesday nights at a new spot. We'll see how that goes. Hopefully it takes off and I'll have a third weekly residency. I've been able to update my song books for gigs. Took some things out, put some new things in. I'm still going to add some more tunes and I'm looking forward to writing some new tunes to fill the gaps for what I want to be playing. Things are to the point where I'm splitting my jazz stuff in two. Got the straight-ahead and original stuff and some groovy soul-jazz and original stuff. Two different approaches with some overlap in the song list. This should make it possible to resurrect the Noah Peterson Soul-Tet at some point. That would be awesome.

Made a few tweaks to the ol' home studio to get ready for summer production and even got rid of some stuff that's been hanging around for too long. Makes my tiny office cleaner and gives a few more inches of space. And guess what? Got some NEW tracks and videos out:

Youtube Videos first:

Widespread Noise - Quiet Mind, Quiet Soul - This is a beautiful, spacious, ambient track made on the Moog Matriarch synthesizer with a little help from a KORG KAOSSILATOR Pro and is off of the release "Dreams of Bliss." It's 9:34 of a mental reset. If you're having a hectic day, put this on, chill out, get lost in your thoughts. You'll be refreshed and ready for the rest of the day. The video footage was shot from the back of a kayak as we paddled through the beautiful Mangrove pools in Key West Florida.

The Noah Peterson Quartet - But Not For Me - This is a live performance from a concert at The Pearl in San Antonio. I was hired to put together a weekend of music for the observance of Memorial Day. I had bands that all had veterans in them. My quartet features me (USMC), Larry Natwick (USMC) on Keys, and Juan Acosta (ARMY) on bass. Harvey Dickens is on the drums, not a vet, but a fine American. We played on Memorial Day for a steady crowd of around 300. It was a mild 102 degrees, but the band was just as hot.

The Noah Peterson Quartet - Blue - This is a studio recording and a newly released single. This tune was composed for a concert series that I produced called "A Celebration of Poetry in Jazz." It was inspired by the poem "Blue" written by Leanne Grable. If you want more details, watch the video!

GrooveTronX - Mystic Lights - This Deep House based track is 15:37 seconds of groovy chill. Just a tiny bit of sax on it in the background. Johnny Carrera lays down a lot of tasty guitar. I've got some fine loops going behind the scenes with some great synth bloops, bleeps, sweeps, and accents. I also break out the AKAI EWI 5000 on this. That's a synthesizer that mimics aspects of being a wind instrument. It's a entertaining little jam that's great for background music.

And summer is in full swing....

The Zydeco season has come to an end. No more crawfish boils and it's time to hang up the rubboard for a bit. It's hot, hot, hot in Texas so it's time to get inside and get back to some studio work!

But there's still some jazz happening! My jazz residency at Jardin Restaurant is going great. Every Wednesday from 6:30-8:30pm is Jazz in the Garden. It's an outdoor, weather dependent event. Address: 555 Funston Place, SATX. We'll be varying up the program from week to week to ensure you get more fun for your jazz dollar!

Speaking of studio time.... There's new tracks coming out in July! GrooveTronX has two new release queued up, there's a new (expired link). track waiting for artwork and I'm knocking out some parts for more tracks as well. I've got some ideas for new tunes and I'm still working on the editing and mixing for a collaboration with Art Martinez for a new electro-cumbia/hip-hop track.

But wait!!! There's more!!!! The final 2022 Texas LoopFest Videos are going up - two brand new ones from Lynnwood King are up with the other two going up this week. All just in time to start getting ready for the 2023 Texas LoopFest happening Oct 14th at King William Park.

But don't go away yet!!!! There's still more!!!! A brand new video for GrooveTronX is up - "Sunset Strip" 12:48 seconds of groovy beats, electrified sax, guitar, samples. All recorded live at Southtown 101! It's a Nu Jazz/Synthwave/Jazztronica vibe that's sexy, driving, and mildly hypnotic. The footage is fast-forward, night-time driving scenes in an urban setting. When you need to take a break and reset your brain and soul, put this baby on and find your happy place.

Things have been moving so fast I didn't send out a May newsletter! Lots of music was played: Zydeco, Jazz, and electronic was served up hot.

Speaking of jazz, I've got a new residency at Jardin Restaurant. Every Wednesday from 6:30-8:30pm I'm hosting Jazz in the Garden. This is an outdoor, weather dependent event. Address: 555 Funston Place, SATX. We'll be varying up the program from week to week to ensure you get more fun for your jazz dollar!

June slows down a little on the performance side of things. Maybe I'll be able to catch up on some studio time. Got a few things that are close to being ready for release. And GrooveTronX will be putting out some previously unreleased live tracks! Jean-Pierre and the Zydeco does have a big show in Dallas though. We're playing the Denton Drive Live Concert series opening up for Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band.

NEW NEWS:

2023...a year of change.

I did my Individual Artist Grant performance at Hemisfair. That was dive into using my loop station in a whole new matter, producing tracks to perform with, all in an electric hybrid of cumbia. That, for me, was the actual end of 2022. I'm already working on one of the tracks to put soon. Should be fun.

Got a new video up for "Soledad" from Widespread Noise. The video footage is the lovely, downtown San Antonio Riverwalk. This track was made solely with the Moog Matriarch. 11:32 of good vibes that refreshes your soul. I really enjoyed making this. It came from an hour long live stream. I was watching footage I shot on my kayak. So it's low level water shots on a large lake. I used the Riverwalk footage and put a filter on it after a lot of color correction. I wanted it a little out of focus, but with some color and intensity. There are times, when you see reflections or sunlight shining and the effects really pops.

And I've got a brand new single out "Ice Cream Sundae" Spotify here. It's a fun, driving, electro-house track with a nice little hook on the synth. Little sprinkles of effects thrown in for some added ear candy.

Got a handful of new 2022 Texas LoopFest Videos up as well! Alyson Alonzo doing vocal looping with some backing tracks, James Sidlo doing industrial ambient with guitar and effects, Alex Bennett doing a couple of soulful tunes with guitar and vocals, Thawind Mills doing a several songs with vocals, guitar, and beats.

And so 2022 wraps up a long and grueling year.

SA Veterans turned out a chilly, but nice event. Some great performances and around 7,000 attendees. Couple of fun moments for me in there. I got to coordinate the fighter-jet flyover, that was very cool. And at the end of the night, just before the laser light show kicked off, we had to lower our flag that was hoisted 165 feet in the air so it wouldn't catch the light. The flag was around 20X30 feet and as it was being brought down and impromptu group of vendors and attendees helped me an my crew keep it from touching the ground and we properly folded it. I had my partner for the event helping me on one side and it was the most meaningful moment of the day.

As things for the month wound down and I began to get caught up on much-delayed duties from my regular life I spent a couple of weeks sleeping in late when possible. And I was able to get back to playing music. Had some great zydeco gigs, a couple sax & synth shows, and the Airport has me jamming with my jazz trio these days. Yep, back to playing jazz. The circle is complete.

Got a couple gigs, but mostly it's going to be knuckling down to knock out that end of year paperwork, get some domestic duties done and work on my grant project.

It's go time...

So I took two weeks off. Kinda. Me taking time off, just means I slow down and ignore some things. I did sleep in, I did eat everything, I did ignore phone calls and emails, and I did spend a weekend in a wading pool. And then that all ended. It ended before that, but I refused to ruin my "vacation."

Horrific Pix ((expired link)) has been open just shy of a month. It's not what I would call a smashing success, but it does bring in customers, both walk-in and advance ticket purchases. I've already swapped one room out. We're featuring art from CJ Duron. He's some some glass carvings displayed and he's going to come in and "do" the room. I did some painting this weekend and hopefully he'll be set this week or next for his end. I've also been upgrading some of the rooms - a little extra decor here, and little extra prop there...Little things go a long way sometimes. Haunted Oaks - (expired link) is going full tilt on the build. I've become very adept at this. I know what I want to deliver for the experience. Got some stuff planned for the jump scares that should freak people out. Not gonna lie, the opening sequence is gonna get people twisted. I'm going hard for sensory overload and reaching to push every button of fear, discomfort, anxiety, guilt, and any other trigger I can pull. Smell, dark, color, sound, temperature, closed spaces, religion, light, subliminal programming, things touching you... and that's just the first 40 feet. And you're not going to get through it quickly. And you're not going to enjoy it. After that there's some rooms with sensor surprises of light, sound, and motion. It'll be dark, there will be fog, massive sound, and creepiness. Things should be uncomfortable, you should be ready to pop and then the first jump scare hits, and it's gonna hit hard. I'm anticipating we'll be taking a lot of people out the emergency exit at this stage. The build is going fast and I'm digging through all kinds of stuff to make it horrible. Check it out on TikTok if you want spoilers/visuals. Yes, my hands still hurt. Trying to mix up the jobs so I don't damage them. As my friend Calvin said, rub some CBD oil on them. Gonna try that soon amigo! Fortunately, I don't have the level of detail to go into for this project as I did with Horrific Pix. We've announced that we're opening on Sept 23rd and already started doing pre-sales. Rock and roll!!!!

I had a handful of solo gigs for August. Forgot how much I enjoy being a musician and how much easier the work is. for July and started breaking out some ideas I've been working on for the grant I was awarded. I'm still just playing around, but the response has been fabulous. People are loving it! I'm judging based on the tip jar, people dancing, and the amount of cell phone videos. I'm also out of stickers... Much work to be done there; I'm still very much in the research phase. It's fun to see the research coming out in the shows though. I've got my tech dialed in and I'm really good at it. Soon I'll be writing the material. And I'm itching to write!!! I haven't felt like this in years. Not gonna rush it though. Gonna milk that desire for all it's worth so when I have a minute it's pouring out of my soul.

Got some house projects done as well. I know some of you are thinking, bruh... how trashed is your house? I've been reading about this for a decade. Well, I bought a fixer-upper. And everything needed to be fixed. And Texas is no joke for living in. Heat, rain, hail, wind, and pollen/mold/dust, and pestilence. So maintenance is necessary and things will still go wrong. But while much has been done, there's still a not too horribly long list of stuff to do. So ping-ponging between maintenance and projects keeps the progress inching along.

But is fall festival season.... SA Veterans Day, Muertos Fest, Texas LoopFest, Zombiewalk, Holiday Gift Market, World Heritage Festival and a few other things thrown in for good measure will keep me up late and up early through November. Muertos Fest is turning a new corner. It's already the largest event in San Antonio and it's going to be on NBC, nationally. That's going to be a game changer for the event. SA Veterans Day exploded this year. The sponsor support is unlike anything I've experienced. Two stages, Coffey Anderson is our headliner, jet fly-over, parachute demo team, laser light show, military vehicles on site, vet orgs on site, food, art, beer, huge support from the Gary Sinise Foundation, US Army North, the City of San Antonio and on and on and on. It's a big deal. This is one of those great things to be involved with. It's an absolute honor. Zombiewalk is just getting going. We've announced the date and started advanced ticket sales. LOTS of work to be done there yet. Hunting down sponsors for that tasty little party as we speak. And the Holiday Gift Market. I love this (big) little, quite event. Low-key, not a lot of infrastructure, not a lot to do in advance. Just pack a ton of holiday vendors into Hemisfair, get some tasty snacks for sale, get a fun DJ spinning the holiday favorites, and let the shoppers know. Best part is, every vendor I had last year made a nice chunk of money. I love it when it's perfect like that.

Brace yourself, I'm getting personal:

When you wake up in the morning, with hands so stiff you can't even move them. And you have a gig... But it all needs to be done and you have to do it. That's the reality of my hands right now. It takes me back to when I was in college, many moons ago. I was setting up the MIDI lab and needed to move some tables... I asked one of the professors, Tim Racz, for some help moving the table. He said, in his thick accent, with his pudgy body exhaling cigarette smoke, "I cannot, I am....violinist." I was fresh out of the Marines. Pretty sure my face said what I was thinking and it wasn't kind. So I moved the damn tables all by me onesies. Fast forward 30 years and I'm feeling the labor in my hands stopping me from be able to play my saxophone with any speed. And I think, well damn, old Tim might have been on to something. And then I'm all, ya know, I never really was a blistering chop master, I always had soul, emotion, and hooks. So, I think I'm fine... Decisions, choices, acceptance, meh...

Rudyard Kipling's "If" still bangs my brain as experiential truth that's deep and aware of consequence.

Horrific Pix ((expired link)) has the grand opening on Aug 6th. Whilst I'm the literal worst person ever to do this, I did it. I'm not into horror, slasher, demon, hell, paranormal, graphic novel stuff. But I did it. I made use of props we had and fabricated a whole bunch of other stuff. And I'm proud of it. It's bad-ass. You should come and see for yourself. It is unique and it's great. I may have to eat those words if it tanks, but I'm confident and I don't care. The amount I've learned about materials, processes, perception, work-flow, finding ideas, making something out of nothing, etc... has been amazing. I'm not the same man I was 10 weeks ago. I think different, I look at things different, I have new skills. I've also spent a great deal of time doing intensely creative work across multiple mediums completely alone with my thoughts. In the Marines, there's a great expression that you don't need the back story to understand, "Reach down, grab a hold!!!! " I'm way down, with two meat-cleavers of hands grabbing everything.

But I've had help. My friend Zane. I hire him here and there to help with grunt work, cleaning, two-man jobs, and even a little creative decoration from time to time. He has been my number one. Anthony Garcia (I met him and Zane on the same night at The Mix, many moons ago, and joined Anthony's band, La Chichada) has been a great help and teacher about lighting. And I'm not unskilled at lighting. I've got years of TV and live gigs that I've done very well with lighting. But this....wow.... what an education. Layers, shadows, colors. It's been fun. Not gonna lie, he's all what about this, and I go and grab it or I go and make it and put it up. He's all, yeah... let's try this. Pretty sure I popped his head on how fast I could rip, strip, and wire a variety of lights. I love working with him on these things. I'm starting to see it how he does, but no way do I have that in my brain like he does. My new friend Heidi is a make-up person, but she jumped in for some prop making and has been our "third man" (as has Zane) on lighting and decor suggestions. And she and Anthony are hard-core Halloween, horror, creepy, etc... kind of folks. It's fascinating to learn from them both.

Make no mistake, win or lose, Horrific Pix is on me. We're about to find out. But I know what I did and it's great. I'm proud of it. And again, Kipling's "If" comes back 'round again. I'm do want to mention my wife sending me out every day with food, water, snacks, clean clothes, sewing patches, and putting up with me not being around. She never wants to be part of my public life, but too bad. Once in a while it's gonna happen. Thanks babe. It was so much harder doing all this whilst you were away.

I had a fair amount of solo gigs for July and started breaking out some ideas I've been working on for the grant I was awarded. I'm still just playing around, but the response has been fabulous. People are loving it! I'm judging based on the tip jar, people dancing, and the amount of cell phone videos. I'm also out of stickers... Much work to be done there; I'm still very much in the research phase. It's fun to see the research coming out in the shows though. I've got my tech dialed in and I'm really good at it. Soon I'll be writing the material. And I'm itching to write!!! I haven't felt like this in years. Not gonna rush it though. Gonna milk that desire for all it's worth so when I have a minute it's pouring out of my soul.

Not much time for anything else. Been keeping up on the house chores and getting slowly caught up on some house projects. Fall festival season is gearing up, so that's beginning to take up some schedule space as well. Suffice to say my plate is full.

One fun thing with tech is been able to see views/streams on videos and tracks. Right now I've got someone going through my loopfest videos on youtube. It's great. I see these single watches pop up chronologically. And that was the whole point, plug in, turn in, watch, learn, enjoy. And while the numbers are small, it's a joy to see folks, here and there, dive in hard. It's awesome. And there's 1,000+ videos... Color me impressed.

The music at Pizzeria Vesuvio has been going great. I think I've got a great line-up dialed in at this point. August schedule here! Anyway, thanks, as always, for tuning in. The only reason I get to do this is because y'all buy a download, throw a tip in the jar, come to a gig, watch a video, and stream some music. All of that pays me, albeit a tiny amount, but it does add it. Thank you. Please check it all out and get down on the stuff that makes you groove.

NEW NEWS:

Put the pedal to the metal baby - we're off and running! My "open" August wasn't. Did a "Back -to-School" event for the kiddos in early august and finished the month off with a short notice event for "Battle of the Branches" obstacle course race at the Alpha Warrior complex for Grunt Style. In between was a handful of gigs, livestreams, meetings, meetings, meetings, site visits, conference planning, and Texas LoopFest planning. (Got some huge news coming up for some really fun October events, but I can't let the cat out of the bag just yet.) I didn't get any of my studio stuff done. But I did book some new gigs and released some music!!!

Widespread Noise - On a shocking note, nothing new this month... so enjoy the new stuff from last month. This Way That - glitch beats with minimal synth accompaniment. Deep Inside a Peaceful Mind - a lovely ambient track. Paradise Surrounds Us - ambient track.

Noah Peterson - Put It In Your Pocket is getting some decent video streams. Youtube video here. NEW: Dark Pulsation is an electronic track with some great synth sounds. Super fun skate boarding video as well. Pressure Cooker is 13:43 seconds of tension. I do a little story-telling on it for vocals, but it pretty much hangs out in the same tense space with a nice beat and synth pads. I'm also posting my livestreams on my Youtube channel here.
