UPDATE : April 15, 2023
Hi Friends;
Pete here !
If you've read any updates from me before, skip down to the *******.
I am a senior (B.1947) medically disabled songwriter, unable to travel or perform live, and long past any career aspirations. However, I have written many songs (well over 850 in several genres) and feel that a few of them deserve the opportunity to be considered.
The reason that I mention that I am medically disabled is that my condition stopped me from being able to travel, perform live or use professional recording studios to do my songs, so I had to do them here, at home, in my basement, on old, donated equipment from musicians I used to work with. I did the best I could with what I had (I played all the instruments and sang all the male vocal parts) ... not professional quality, but the songs come across, I think.
Unfortunately, I have been diagnosed with early onset Myeloma (Bone Marrow Cancer), and combined with a couple of other health issues (not the least of which was the effects of an accident that resulted in severe Cervical Spinal Stenosis and a concussion) I am now unable to do any more recording (or even playing) and am concentrating on trying to get my songs heard. That task also helps a great deal in keeping me thinking positively (more or less)....
*******
As a Songwriter, I'm just trying to highlight my songs, SO, for the most part, when I have three of my songs on the page, there are associated "videos" to watch, (either on YouTube or on FaceBook ... for me, the second one is preferred, because I reap absolutely NO benefits from YouTube using my songs.) with EARTH SONG having actual pictures. Any songs I drop here in the future will have a lyric video as well on one of those sites, and I'll mention it if I'm allowed to do so. If knowing the lyrics as the song is playing is something you like, then the lyric video is the way.
I have a few songs of mine placed on some streaming services, so if you are subscribed to any of these, I'd appreciate it if you'd give them a listen. (Spotify, Deezer, iHeart Radio, Amazon, iTunes, YouTube, plus others I can't remember right now). Just check for Pete Dowan (pronounced like plowin' ).
Just put 3 of my "Dance" type songs on here ... so enjoy, if they're you're style.
Take care and Stay Safe ... wear a mask if you're not sure !

Jan 08, 2022 Update
Hi Music Friend;
Definitely winter here ... high today of -2.2 Celsius. HAPPY NEW YEAR ... A bit late, I know, but N1M only allows updates at certain times for those of us who can't afford to throw money at them.
If you've read any updates from me before, skip down to the *******.

I hope you are doing as well as is possible. I am staying home, except for my appointments and treatments, and for Wendy's appointments.
I removed my Christmas related songs, and rearranged the order of the songs on my page ... not that it really matters.
If you have listened to the first song on the list (a slow one called "If I Live Forever"), which is one I just placed there today, you'll note that it is a duet, with a female voice joining mine. That is my daughter, Aimee ... we recorded that about 10 years ago.
Also I am planning to place on an uptempo one about a ski area. (it IS winter, after all)
Called "Hidden Valley". It really is Heaven in a White Disguise.
And another Dance type song (I think) for the Ladies, called "Wind-Drifter".
Hope you enjoy something amongst the songs on my page.
This is nothing to do with music, but for Christmas, we received news that Wendy's (my wife) most recent CT Scan showed that her tumours are continuing to shrink ... so the Chemo is working. Now, I just need for my numbers to stop going the wrong way, and then we'd both have positive news.
KEEP SMILING ... good for the soul !
Until next time, take care and STAY SAFE ... Wear a Mask if you're not sure !
Cate later. (in case you're wondering, "cate" is my short form for "communicate")

Dec 21, 2021 Update
Hi Music Friend;
It is OFFICIALLY WINTER !! And for those to whom it applies ... MERRY CHRISTMAS ... And for anyone to whom that does not apply, I hope you have a most enjoyable celebration of your faith.

I hope you are doing as well as is possible. I am staying home, except for my appointments and treatments, and for Wendy's appointments.
I took a chance and added a couple of poor quality recordings from 43 years ago (can't be !!) that I did of my three man group, DOWAN. It was made up of Pat Gamble (drums), Jay Butler (Lead Guitar) and me, Pete Dowan (Guitar, Keyboards and Bass Pedals ... often all at the same time ... and for those who question that ... I was hammerheading the guitar with my left hand while playing keyboards with the right ... and bass pedals all the time). All three of us provided vocals, with me primarily singing lead.
The two songs are more or less hard rock, featuring Jay's guitar work.
The first is "I Think I See The Sunshine" ... pretty straight forward statement saying that better things are coming. (boy, was I wrong !)
The second is about Alien Abduction, called "Are You Man ?". I forgot the first couple of words in the second verse, so for anyone who'd like to know (yeah, sure), they are "Felt like" ... leading into "I was in a crystal ball". If you listen in the choruses, you'll notice that I got Jay to use the guitar voice box to do the alien voices "Are You Human ... Are You Man ?". I wrote the song around the effect of that.
Quite a bit different from the other things I've placed here, but I AM eclectic.
Hope you enjoy something amongst the songs on my page.
Again ... enjoy your holiday, and KEEP SMILING ... good for the soul !
Until next time, take care and STAY SAFE ... Wear a Mask if you're not sure !

You may have noticed that I've placed a few more songs (that I wrote) on my page, which I assigned to an album called "Dowan Does Christmas".
In order of placing them (which is NOT the order in which they appear on the page)
"HE Is Born (A Christmas Story)". About that Christmas Eve over 2000 years ago. The strange thing about writing this song is that, while I was doing it, it seemed like I was actually observing what I wrote. VERY eerie ! I'd never experienced that before, and haven't since.
"Love For Christmas". Pretty straight forward uptempo Christmas Love Song, which I guessed is in the Country Genre (I never know !).
"Santa's Magic Sack". A children's Christmas Song ... haven't heard any for quite some time about Santa for little kids. AND, I was helped by some family and neighbourhood kids with the singing.
PLUS, I just now added a "sort of" Tongue in cheek Country/Pop/Rock song called "john JOHN".
Chances are I won't be allowed another update till next month, so I'll now wish you, dear reader, as MERRY a CHRISTMAS as is possible, given the situation. And for anyone to whom that does not apply, I hope you have a most enjoyable celebration of your faith.
Until next time, take care and STAY SAFE ... Wear a Mask if you're not sure !

I've placed a few more songs (that I wrote) on my page, which I'm assigning to an album called "Back In The Day", because these (and some which will follow) were recorded by groups I was in, or was leader of, in the 1970's. OBVIOUSLY not current, but I'm betting that no-one here has heard any of them, so they ARE new to you.
Starting with "I REALLY LOVE YOU" and "GRAND OLD MAN". (see if you can find a lyrical tie to Abe Lincoln in this song)
Also putting another song, of the fantasy kind, called "CARDBOARD MAN".
PLUS, a "sort of" Country/Pop/Rock song called "FEEL SO GOOD".
I will be attempting to add a few different songs each month, though please don't hold me to that ... I'm still battling Myeloma (see above somewhere), and my wife, Wendy, is still going through Chemo for cancer as well (just finished her 9th round !).
Until next time, take care and STAY SAFE ... Wear a Mask if you're not sure !

I have been informed by N1M that my "campaign" (actually, I'm NOT running for anything !) has been paused, so no one can forward this or (I guess) anything of mine on any social media format. Guess I did something wrong, but nothing has been explained to me. Maybe by the time the next update is allowed, I'll know something.
I currently have several (35 on Spotify) songs of mine placed on some streaming services, so if you are subscribed to any of these, I'd appreciate it if you'd give them a listen. I am also giving it "a shot" here for the next year ... I am now allowed to place up 30 songs on this site, so I'm on my way to doing just that.
Since my last allowed update, here are the songs I've added on Number One Music.
Sept 15 to Oct 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month, and since I am an admirer of both the Latino music and the lifestyle, I wrote a song from my perspective about how those of us who are not Hispanic can TRY to be ...
LIKE A LATINO
Something that all humans have a right to have; regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or financial situation, and that is a
RIGHT TO LOVE
A guitar rock song about the singer's girlfriend, who really loves to dance.
DANCERELLA
Song about a night club named after a hideout for outlaws back in the Wild West.
HOLE IN THE WALL
Slow love song describing one of the unexpected connections that can happen in life.
WHO KNEW
Song meant for a female singer projecting the rage that arose from being cheated on.
THAT DOES IT !
There will be more soon. I am placing them in an album called "Dowan in the Basement". We'll see where that goes.
I will be attempting to add a few different songs each month, though please don't hold me to that ... I'm still battling Myeloma (see above somewhere), and my wife, Wendy, is still going through Chemo for cancer as well (just finished her 7th round !).

I currently have several (30 or so on Spotify, I think) songs of mine placed on some streaming services, so if you are subscribed to any of these, I'd appreciate it if you'd give them a listen. (Spotify, Deezer, iHeart Radio, Amazon, iTunes, YouTube, plus others I can't remember right now). Just check for Pete Dowan (and so you know, my last name is pronounced like plowin' ). AND, if you enjoy anything, PLEASE encourage acquaintances to try a listen ?
I am also giving it "a shot" here for the next year ... I am now allowed to place up 30 songs on this site, so I'm on my way to doing just that.
Here are a few descriptions of the songs I'm placing or keeping on Number One Music.
As we know, since as far back as history goes, there have been wars and battles going on constantly amongst various factors of our species (A SAD legacy !), and there are always casualties which are reported as Numbers. I am placing a slow, sad song that focuses on one of the invisible casualties ... those that don't show up in numbers.
Needless to say, NO ONE has to listen ... I am REALLY lousy at categorizing my songs into genres (perhaps someone can suggest what this song fits it ?), but it is emotional.
The title expresses the dreariness of the subject ... "Why Did Daddy Have To Die ?".
I think that the first line in the second verse is the saddest line I have ever written.
My "Earth Song (Why Don't We Stand ?)" is one that I will NOT be removing ... it IS for our Planet !
"Pinch Me" seems to be one that a number of listeners enjoy. So that will remain. Could be a good one when it is safe for Dancing Venues again.
I am also reinstating some of the songs that I had to remove previously, so I could add new ones (when my limit was three songs).
These include, for now, "Love Me Now" (obvious what IT is about), "Ice Age", which submits a different view of what is happening on our planet and "TwoSome", which is a Country Blues Song that harkens back to the conditions during the 1930's. There will be more soon. I am placing them in an album called "Dowan in the Basement". We'll see where that goes.
I hope someone will give these a listen. I know that the "casualty song" is not something to be Enjoyed, but it deals with something that IS a part of human reality.
I will be attempting to add a few different songs each month, though please don't hold me to that ... I'm still battling Myeloma (see above somewhere), and my wife is going through Chemo for cancer as well. No-one EVER said life is easy.
Until next time, take care and STAY SAFE ... Wear a Mask if you're not sure !

I recently had a few (10, I think) songs of mine placed on some streaming services, so if you are subscribed to any of these, I'd appreciate it if you'd give them a listen. (Spotify, Deezer, iHeart Radio, Amazon, iTunes, YouTube, plus others I can't remember right now). Just check for Pete Dowan (pronounced like plowin' ).
I have found a couple of old, "Stage Performance" songs of mine (from my Trio DOWAN way-y back in time) ... don't know yet if I'll put them on here, because we were a Rock Band ... plus, the recordings are not good quality. But we had a "bash" on stage, and that, for the most part, comes across. Some songs that I'm proud of as well.
Take care and Stay Safe ... wear a mask if you're not sure !

Hi;
*******
Healthwise, things are more or less stable ... my Oncologist told me to "keep doing whatever it is you are doing" ... so I take that as a positive.
I've found quite a number more of OLD songs of mine that were stuck in a box in the storeroom. Old reel-to-reel tapes of songs, that is. If you don't know what reel-to-reel means, just google it, please. It would take me too long to explain. But the songs were done roughly (so I'd remember them) and the quality of both the sound and my performances leave something to be desired. I've only got just over a hundred songs of mine online, which means there are about 1900 (one thousand nine hundred) that aren't there. A lot of the early ones are crap, part of the learning process of both songwriting and home recording.
Over the years, I have written in several genres (no symphonies or rap, though), mainly because I would follow whatever the direction the song took me when it surfaced. I have always thought that I discovered songs, as opposed to creating them. When it would "bob up" in the sea of music, I'd swim over, climb aboard and go on what I always hoped would be a tuneful adventure. Needless to say, not all destinations were satisfying.
I found a tape with the idea for an album that I "constructed" in the mid 1970's (yeah, I'm old, remember ?). It was something that could not possibly be done back then, because it was about 40 minutes long, and non-stop. Songs tied together by a musical narrative that told a story about hitch-hiking across Canada, from the Pacific to the Atlantic. It wasn't until CD's came along that it would have been possible to do, but by then my health situation (SCH ... Severe Chemical Hypersensitivities) had taken over my life, and my studio recording days and stage performance days were over.
I did take a few of the songs from that album idea (it was to be called "Summer Diary") and home record them here at home in the 1990's and early 2000's. I shall end this note with a link to one of them, inspired by my first impressions upon encountering the Rocky Mountains.
I hope you are staying safe and doing your utmost to keep those around you safe as well. (expired link).
Here's where the song is: "Way Up High": (expired link)
Take care, and keep smiling.
