Not quite sure how all of this works yet ... If I'm right this is a request to collaborate ... I would love to write with other people of different styles. I look forward to your response and perhaps a little direction on how to proceed... Peace... Carl
The seeds for The Universal were sown a long time ago by Terry Shaughnessy, the front man and songwriter behind it all. He grew up completely surrounded by music. Uncles who played in bands, a Mother who was a member of the Small Faces Fan Club in her teens and an avid fan of Otis Redding and all things Stax and other family members who were, and still are, avid vinyl record collectors. Everything from The Beatles to Neil Young to Little Feat to Jackson Browne to Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis filled up hours and days and nights. Always writing from an early age, whether it be poems, short stories or just plain old commentary, Shaughnessy decided to take the next logical step and write songs in earnest, taking them out on the road in the beginning with just his voice and an acoustic guitar as backing. Learning his trade and even up until this day, being amazed by the craft of songwriting. As his music progressed, it inevitably got more expansive and Shaughnessy set out to recruit a band. Not just any players could be employed. Shaughnessy has his own personal ethic of ‘Musician Minus Ego Plus Fire’. This meant that band members had to leave their egos at the side of the stage, with everyone becoming a slave to the song and all its needs. It was a long road but he got there eventually and The Universal was born, a band that has gained a reputation for passionate, energetic live shows. With the addition of Piet Koehorst on Lead Guitar, Chris Waring on Bass and David James Gaskell on Drums. Shaughnessy has never looked back. Terry Shaughnessy and The Universal gig extensively, believing this to be the ultimate testing ground for musicians and their songs. They’ve already had the honour to play with the late, great legends Ian McLagan and Joe Strummer. Other shows have included sharing the stage with Ocean Colour Scene, Trio Valore, Steve Cradock, The Chords, The View, The Proclaimers, Secret Affair and legends that are The Zombies. Festivals appearances around Europe have also been a mainstay. Playing shows at Oxegen Festival, T in the Park, Glastonbury and Fest n Mind, to name but a few. They’ve won awards for Best Album at the Galaxy Awards and have also been voted Best Live Band by Rock Realms. They have played anywhere and everywhere in the UK including the famous 100 Club in London, The Cavern in Liverpool and everything in between. They have also appeared on ESPN’s football show ‘Talk Of The Terrace’, playing their song ‘Is This England?’. A call to arms against the malaise of the country and the disease of X Factor. Terry Shaughnessy and The Universal have also worked with producers Winston Rollins and the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and also with Tim Holmes of Death In Vegas. Terry Shaughnessy and The Universal are currently managed by Percy Veer Management.
Paul is an accomplished left handed acoustic guitarist, whom I had pleasure in being his duo partner many years ago.
