About SharBaby & Friends
SharBaby was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, 90 miles outside of Chicago, Illinois. SharBaby started taking guitar lessons at the age of 11 years old. Her Dad bought her first electric guitar at the age of 13. The Guitar was a Harmony Rocket, 1966, Candy Apple Red which she still plays from time to time on stage even now. SharBaby's Dad was a gospel Singer back in the Early 50's and 60's. He sung with the Evening Light's Quartet, The Revelators, and The Lambs Quartet. His group opened for Sam Cooke and The Highway QC's, The Soul Stirrers, The Alabama Blind Boys and many more. SharBaby's Dad's Sister, My Aunt Marie (also a Gospel Singer) gave me the name SharBaby at the age of 6 years old. My Sister Marilyn and I sung for about 15 years around the South Bend and Mishawaka area. SharBaby's Aunt Rosie Brittain wrote some of the songs on different Albums of hers. SharBaby would compose them. SharBaby is also a Songwriter. SharBaby and Her Husband/Manager Jim Newport moved from South Bend, Indiana to Pensacola, Florida in the early 90's where SharBaby played with a Band called "The Big Fat Lie." In that Bank SharBaby played with Chip"Naaman" Jones who played with "The Black Heat" in the 70's. That Group had 2 Gold Albums. Also in that same group was Don Francisco who played with Linda Rhonstadt at sometime. SharBaby was also a nominee for WRNE Radio in Pensacola along with Gwen McCrae.
SharBaby was in the 2006 Blues Challenge for North Michigan (Traverse City) in the Solo Duo competition. While SharBaby was there, she hosted a Huge jam session at the (expired link). Handy Hall on Beale Street. While on Beale Street, SharBaby played at the Rumboogie. Other places that SharBaby has performed are Robert's on Music Row there in Nashville, TN, Printer's Alley Nashville, Tn, and the TN Centennial Blues Festival in 2006 where she opened up for Denise LaSalle. Other Festivals include Willie King's Freedom Creek Festival for 4 years, The Eutaw Black Belt Blues Festival, The Sloss Furnace Blues Fesival and The Tuscaloosa Crawfish Festival in 2006. All of these Festivals here in Alabama.
SharBaby has shared the stage with many Greats such as: The Late Great Willie King, Sam Lay (Howlin Wolf's original Drummer,)T-Model Ford, Honey Boy Edwards, Paul Oschar, Jerry Portnoy, Kent Burnside, Denise LaSalle, Kenny Neal, Lightening Malcolm, Cedric Burnside, Otiel (Bass player for the Allman Brothers,) Nappy Brown, Michael Waites who played 13 years for Jr. Walker and The All Stars, and Deborah Coleman to name a Few. SharBaby performed at the Coin Blues Festival in Malaga, Spain in 2009. SharBaby also performed at the Shakedown Blues Festival in Peterborough, England in 2009, SharBaby did a mini tour in Bristol, England with the International Blues and Beer Festival at East Harling in the UK. SharBaby has an Album out called "Chicago Blues Alabama Style." She did a cover tune called Mercury Blues that went to number 1 on the Roadhouse Blues and Boogie Singles on Cashbox Charts in 2010. SharBaby was on a 22 show tour in France, Luxemborg, and Belgium Last Year in 2013. She is due for another tour in France in 2015. SharBaby is also a Beginner's guitar teacher for the Alabama Blues Project. At this time, SharBaby is working on a New Album hoping to be released soon.
