Dancehall veteran Sleepy Wonder has been going strong since the early ‘80s, when he emerged as one of the youngest deejays to control the microphone for Sugar Minott’s Youthman Promotion soundsystem. He truly came into his own later in the decade, recording hard-edged digital dancehall for the Brooklyn-based Park Heights imprint and for Lloyd Barnes’ vaunted Bullwackies label. In the early ‘00s, Sleepy’s career took a fortuitous turn. A successful collaboration with the jetsetting electronica outfit Thievery Corporation led him to sign on with the group as a full-time member. Though Sleepy flourished with Thievery Corporation, some listeners worried he was letting his dancehall career fall by the wayside. Such fears were put to rest with Injustice, a superb collection of roots and dancehall cuts that appeared in 2009. Geometric Echoes builds on that album's success. It finds Sleepy excelling over a handful of spacious digital dancehall productions and branching out to explore unexpected new territory. “Big in a Body,” for instance, is a frantic drum and bass workout that blends elements of jungle and ragga, while “My Vibes” is a crushingly heavy industrial track...
