About SOGP Music
SOGP which stands for Shades of Grey Productions was founded by Thomas Ferraro in Columbia, SC on July 4th 1990. Starting out as a (expired link). (Doing Business As) in the music creation, writing, recording and sound reenforcement business. He came up with the name while sitting in the shade of a bridge at the intersection of Broad River Road and Greystone Boulevard in Columbia while waiting for a tow truck to pick up his car.
"I was sitting there waiting for the truck and that's when I came up with the name and original slogan (Shades of Grey Productions... because not everything is black and white!) and I changed the spelling of gray to grey because of the location I was at the time... I thought it was a catchy phrase that would get people's attention!"
Thomas, originally from upstate NY developed his musical influences there and then moved to New Jersey where he took on a myriad of influences to help develop his own sound and style of playing during the heyday of the mid 80's and the rage and popularity of MTV. While managing the music store Piano's Plus, Thomas took the opportunity to turn the store into a personal recording studio after hours and took up every free moment with every teacher to better understand music and music theory itself.
With the gained knowledge and experiences from professionals such as Tim Jone, Jimmie Leahey, Ray Delvecchio Jr. and Sr., Steve Linane and a host of others he continued to build his well of knowledge.
However the environment was conducive to building his craft the location and timing were during an avalanche of conflicting styles and stage presentations from Kiss to Motley Crue to Rat to Bon Jovi to Springsteen. The variations of directions created an atmosphere of too much concentration. So he took the chance to pack everything he owned into his car and get as far away from the saturation effect.
By the time he had reached Columbia he had mutated his sound into an amalgam of David Gilmour meets Joe Satriani meets Eddie Van Halen meets Steve Howe meets Steve Vai.
Thomas then met up with Jerry Johns and Daryl Hill and formed "Cartunes" band as a result of working with Jerry as "Tom and Jerry" and then adding Daryl and eventually Wade Miles and Wayne Simms. Cartunes worked the local southeastern states during the times of Queensryche, Pearl Jam, Hootie and the Blowfish and the modernization of Country Rock and Garth Brooks, Travis Tritt and Brooks and Dunn.
After leaving the South Carolina scene Thomas eventually made his way to Houston, TX in 1999 where he kept working the sound under SOGP Music and adding the moniker "seek opportunity, garner potential" because he felt that times were changing and challenges were everywhere. Thomas continues to this day working on various pieces that have been recently created as well as those which he authored back in the mid 80's and early 90's.
"Some pieces are timeless, others have a limit and the clock is always ticking, but eventually all the pieces will come together!"
