About So Unique
In an era when women are making a serious impact on hip-hop, South Florida has another female voice that’s making noise in the streets through her music. Although she was born in Chicago, Ravinia “So Unique” Swan moved to Fort Lauderdale at the young age of 6 and immediately began to soak up the Sunshine State’s rich hip-hop culture. Her name ‘So Unique’ comes from her rare government name. Whenever people asked her what her name was as a kid, they would always respond with “That’s So Unique.”
At 15, So Unique surrounded herself with the sounds of rappers like Missy Elliot, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Eve, Trina, and the late singer Aaliyah. As she grew into an outstanding basketball star all throughout her high school/college career, these artists inspired her to ditch her hoop dreams and take her music career seriously.
After a rough start in the industry, So Unique finally got her footwork proper once she landed an opening slot on T-Pain’s first tour in 2006. During her come-up, So Unique ran into trouble after she was sent to jail a no-weapon battery charge in 2008. She spent a year behind bars before she was released with a renewed focus on her music and other side hustles. Now, she’s ready to hit the ground running with a clean slate in the rap game.
