My new single "Soul Of The Nation" was released on February 25th on all streaming platforms!

Watching the carnage and turmoil caused by Putin's power-hungry invasion of Ukraine stirs deep anger in me. When I was six years old, my family moved to Russia as missionaries, where we lived for five years. Our apartment building in Конько́во neighborhood of Moscow looked exactly like the bombed-out structures we are seeing in Kharkiv. My heart breaks for those people.



That time overseas shaped my appreciation for the freedom today's generation of Americans experience and taught me that a nation’s leaders shape the lives not only of their own citizens, but of people across the world.



Against this backdrop, my new single, Soul of the Nation, releases today. Crafted as a song of hope and civic formation, there perhaps is no better moment for it to arrive in our lives. I hope that you listen to it, share it, and allow it to seep into your soul. Each verse is designed to form us into humble and bold citizens who work together to keep ourselves—and others—free.



I must express my deepest gratitude to the friends and collaborators that brought this song to life. From my co-writer Jenn Bostic to my producer Evan Redwine to the patron who provided the grant that enabled me to record this song - it truly takes a community to bring beauty and art into the world. Together, may we continue to steward, sustain, and serve the soul of the nation.

Music plays constantly in our cities, cars, and cafes. This sonic landscape subtly shapes the way we feel about a place and ourselves within it. In the West Village neighborhood of New York City where I lived, this sonic landscape reverberates with diversity. Bruce Springsteen thumps through janky speakers in a cobweb-laced corner of WXOU Bar. And on a leisurely stroll on the West Side Highway, you can feel the bass from a biker with a boombox passing by in the fast lane. In my new home of Winston-Salem, jazz nights transform the local cocktail bar into a speakeasy and vinyl record players make dinner parties a DJ experience.

As a singer-songwriter, I believe songs have the power to give us access to our deeper selves and build bridges to each other, especially when we shift from being passive consumers of our sonic landscapes to attuned and intentional listeners of songs and the meanings they contain. As Leo Tolstoy writes, art is “a means of union among people, joining them together in the same feelings, and indispensable for the life and progress toward well-being of individuals and of humanity.” Music has the power to bring diverse voices into harmony.

As a community organizer and experience designer, I’m always looking for ways to create connection, vulnerability, and empathy among diverse people. The pandemic lockdowns, political discord, and social awakenings of the last two years have shown us that, on the deepest levels, we need human connection both to overcome our challenges and flourish despite our struggles.

It is against this backdrop that I was ignited to write a song for the common good of our civic society. “Soul of the Nation” is a song to form generational leadership. It comes out on February 25th.

Nations, people, and communities throughout time have been woven together and formed by the songs they sing together. This song is anchored in the leadership tradition of speeches that use the phrase “let it be said” to frame an intention for living one’s legacy and casting a light of hope and kindness into a culture of division and discord. Each verse describes the virtues and attributes needed for a flourishing society. The structure is similar to a hymn, for singable verses bring the simple central concept of the chorus into ever brighter illumination.

This is more than a single––it is a message. I would appreciate your partnership in sharing it wide and boldly when the song hits on February 25th. Whether to friends, family, colleagues, or the nation, each share and send gives this song wings.

I just released a new single on July 2nd entitled "In Between". It is avaialable on all streaming platforms.

In 2011, I took a leave of absence from my job. My love of music and passion for creating was intensifying; and I desired the opportunity to cultivate my gift.

That year I spent a lot of time in Nashville and was introduced to an incredible artist named Brooke Waggoner. When Brooke agreed to co-write with me, I was ecstatic and totally self-conscious. I brought a few creative ingredients to the table, and Brooke kneaded it into a song.

Like many songs, it sat in a file for years, but in 2018, Makoto Fujimaura picked it to be on our "Lotuses & Mimicry" project. And today - it is officially released into the world.

Almost 10 years after it was written, "In Between" still feels fresh, true, and personal. And, I have a feeling it will be as true on July 2, 2030, as it is on July 2, 2020. . . a heart's cry for courage and hope; a soul accepting that the silver lining is where it blooms

This is the first in a special collaboration with IAM, producer Daniel Smith--of Danielson--, and Makoto Fujimura. More about that story another day. Hey everyone! On April 3, 2020, I released my new single: "Human Life". It is available on all the major streaming platforms. Our world is hurting. Each day brings new heartache, both near and far. And each day we learn human life is precious, fragile, and priceless. . .

Humming to you are the cheerful tones of a banjo and guitar from my new song, “Human Life.” The song tells the story of Willow International. Willow rescues girls out of the sex trafficking industry in Uganda and provides a safe home for them. After a life of tragedy, these girls show strength, joy, and love that inspires me to my core.

Though “Human Life” is a celebration of these particular girls triumphing over the evil of sex trafficking, it is also about all of us. Because their hopes are our hopes. Their dreams, our dreams. And across the distance, we come to recognize our own stories inside of their story.

Each of us — a feather — in freedom’s wing.

I added one of my earlier singles to the list. The song is "We Are the Dreamers" and was featured on the popular reality TV show "Dance Moms". The team of "Blush and Bashful" danced to the song on the Season 7 episode entitled "Battle of The Blondes" and they got a perfect score! I hope you enjoy it!
