Kia ora/Hello to all Under the Sun or UTS Subscribers!
First of all we would just like to thank you for following us and for all of your great messages that have been coming in, it is humbling to know our music is brightening up the day of not just New Zealanders but people all around the world!
Well we have been on a bit of a roll lately. Last month we headed down to Blenheim to play a Wedding and picked up an extra gig at the Yard Bar and Bistro which turned out to be one of the best shows we have played this year! Apparently the Diners weren't used to seeing such a big (expired link) System set up in the venue and were intrigued too see who was going to be playing on this mammoth gear so they all decided to stick around, which meant we walked in to start playing and there were already about 150 people there at 9 O'clock! Needless to say the crowd was absolutely nuts that night and the energy in the room was next level. The owner Joe Johnstone's hospitality was of the highest form and he definitely looked after us while we were there as well!
The next night we did a set at our Trumpet player Reuben's sisters wedding and it was a special night! We started off the night with a "UTS" version of Foreigner's classic "I wanna know what love is" as requested by the groom for the first dance and followed it with a wide array of hit covers to get the party going. The night ended up back at The Yard bar and Bistro and then eventually some of our members partied till the sun came up the next day :)
The following weekend we headed off to Finn Macuhals in Taupo which is one of our residencies doing a back to back fri/sat gig every six weeks or so. As always it was a great weekend with hundreds of people flowing through the dance floor over the weekend, highlights being a couple of Hens parties happening, dragging people out of the crowd to sing with us and hanging out with the locals spinning yarns! Oh and we cant forget the awesome steak dinners that they do!
We had a bit of downtime after this and with an upcoming gig opening for Katchafire, decided that we would knuckle down and come up with a completely new set to freak people out! We spent hours and hours refining what would be the best set we have come up with to date with plenty of hits, instrumentals, harmonies and energy throughout! I
In between all of this we also found time to hit the studio to record our song "Fyah" which was written as the Official Anthem of the Wellington Pride womens 7s team (Due for release Dec 2015).
The week before our opening gig for Katchafire we also did one show in Gisborne NZ at the Retro Bar which was a somewhat quiet but enjoyable night playing to a crowd of about 90 - 100. Those that were there were full of praise and it was also a prime networking opportunity for our team!
Finally, last weekend it was time for us to step up onto the big stage with one of the hardest working, most experienced and most popular Reggae bands of our time, Katchafire!
For some of us it was a dream come true, personally I have listened to them for over 10 years and seen them play numerous times and I never thought I would ever get to share the stage with them! They came across as a really humble group of people who love what they do and despite their successes never belittled us or made us think that they were too good, they even came to the gig early and watched our set, which on that note went as well as we had hoped (Always with a few minor hiccups) but we were lucky to have a huge hyped up crowd!
Katchafire were simply put...AMAZING!! They played all of their well known songs as well as new ones and had the crowd of 400 strong in a frenzy for 2 hours! Near the end of their set, myself and our lead singer Snow Chase were invited on stage to sing Bob Marleys Three little Birds with them. Opting to play percussion rather than sing I was at the Pinnacle of my music career on stage with one of my favourite Reggae Bands jamming out! I only hope for many more moments like this!
After the show we went upstairs and had a few quiet drinks with Katchafire talking music, making jokes and winding down from an amazing night!
Everything we had rehearsed, all of those hours spent practicing, the countless sleepless weekends gigging around the country, all of the hard work we had put in, and most importantly everyones support including you got us here!
So on that note we would like to thank you once again for your support! Please continue to support us on our journey of Love and Light! Much love whanau and please jump on our facebook page and give us a like!
Stay Irie whanau/family!
