About Young Chronic
Young Chronic
Katleho “Young Chronic” Kgame (born 04 January 1997) is a South African rapper, songwriter, producer and aspiring actor. YC is the fourth born of seven siblings. He has two sisters and four brothers. He was mainly brought up by his mother & grandmother, Sylvia & Emily respectively. He doesn’t recognize or know his father. A subject he never ever talks about.
Named by his grandmother, his first name means “conqueror" in the South African languages of Sotho and Tswana. And his last name a verb, means “strangle” and is of the Tswana language. He only speaks two of 11 South African languages, English and Sotho.
He attended Thaba-Tshehlo Primary School, Montshiwa Higher Primary School, and Thabo Senior Secondary School. In late 2016 he dropped out of college to resume the work on his music after four years of inactivity as he was focused on his school work trying to graduate High School. He successfully graduated High School. Started working on his album Gabardine: The Homecoming which drastically failed to reach commercial success.
Stage Name
YC wrote his first song titled, “Sunlight” when he was in fourth grade, in class while other students were working on their class exercise. He then developed a tendency to inadvertently neglect his chores, school work, and other activities to write new songs. Of which dissipated over the years.
At age 14 he used to go to Hip-Hop sessions every Saturday afternoon and was highly praised for his emotional storyline lyrics and engaging choruses. He would sometimes go to different street corners in different neighborhoods and meet with small groups of other rappers and was also praised for his ability to freestyle rap actual stories.
It was at these street corner rap sessions when one of the rappers said, “How can you possibly be so lyrically sick at such a young age?” This question is what inspired the transitive prefix “Young” in his name. Sometime at a Hip-Hop session a guy verbally admired how his songs are so engaging that they keep playing in his mind for long periods of time. This is where the “Chronic” comes from.
Career
YC is also a stage actor. Started acting at the age of 14 and performed all over Johannesburg. He took part in over 6 different productions in a period of four years before he dropped out to focus on his school work till he graduated high school.
Gabardine: The Homecoming - Present
This album has 7 tracks and no featured artists whatsoever. The following is a track list in chronological order:
1. Show Me Love
2. I’ll Find You
3. A better Place
4. I’ll Be Waiting
5. November 9th - Live version
6. Time To Go
7. Gone Forever
The song titles from track 1 to track 7 comprise a sentence. It is one he imagined himself standing before his army of raving fans for the first time and saying to them:
“Show me love and I’ll find you a better place. I’ll be waiting for you all to do so, till November. (Given November is second to the last month of the year, therefore signifies the end of time)” And when the time comes, the time for me to go, I’ll be gone forever.”
In mid December he released a song titled, Have a Little Faith in You and is being well received by a variety of audiences. Have a Little Faith in You is a Hip-Hop record with Pop elements. It’s very energetic and has a somewhat calming effect. It talks about how one’s mental state is the only weapon they have to use against a state of bleakness.
“Challenges aren’t there to bring us down. A challenge is a test. And if you can stand your ground and keep an upright posture when you feel like an unbearable weight is cast on your shoulders, that’s when you evolve.” he said in an interview.
The song is available on all major music streaming services.
